What does the term 'K' stand for?

This has been bugging me for some time now, just keep forgetting to post about it.

Normally when you see bikes for sale, they are advertised as 'K8 2008', etc, so I am assuming that the 'K' stands for 200_.

If this is the case, why not just write 2008 or so like they do when cars are advertised?

Or does the K mean something else?

I always took it as the year of manufacture - my pointy SV was 2007 plate, but a K6.

The way I see it is the "K" number is the model year.

Example.

If you have a GSXR1000 K6 on a 2008 plate its a K6 GSXR not a K8

K is generally used for kilo or thousand, so y2k was year 2000. £5k is £5000 etc etc etc

Suzuki adopted it for their model names to differentiate, pre 2000 models are single letters (W model etc) depending on the year of manufacture, post 2000 models have the K and a number. My bike is a K6 so 2006 model which has a few cosmetic changes from the K5. After 2010 they have now moved onto L so a 2010 bike is an L0, 2011 is L1 and so on.

Just a short hand version to save time as parts are interchangeable between some years but not all engine sizes. It's meant to make everything easier!

I wondered this too so I asked my mate Kradmelder and he told me it stands for 'Kosher'.

Basically, consumers pay a surcharge of 100 shekels on every Suzuki for a Rabbi to give it a blessing.

TLDR; it's just another racket for die Juden.

Yes, model year, yes, Suzuki do it.

It's important to know for getting parts, and particularly important on modern Suzukis since the chances of you buying a "new" bike that's a year or even two years old is fairly high.

indeed a K6 on a 2008 plate.....well it sat in the show room for 2 years before being sold.....so youll want 2006 parts! simples!! however a 2008 plate on a K6 means....RINGER!!

Model years and denoting major changes to a model

For example Kawasaki's ZZR600 runs D1-5 and then E1-9

Parts from any E model should fit another E model and parts for a D model should fit another D but there are very few parts fit both model types.
