Ok, I'm not the most tech savvy person, I know a little bit about a little bit!

I have started to sort my media and have it all stored on a 1tb hard drive that I have acquired from a friend. It is USB only and i have a virgin superhub so no USB connections on that.

The drive is hooked up to my 2007 Mac mini which I am using as a HTPC. I have XBMC and plex running great on there along with Spotify for music.

My question is, if I wanted to remotely access any stored media, or watch anything on xbmc (if possible) on my phone whilst I'm away from home, is it possible???

To do this I would need to wake the mac up, then remotely access it using my iPhone/iPad from wherever I am.

Anyone got any suggestions???

Biggest problem I've had setting this up is buffering, better to download to the tab when at home.

I guess buffering would be a problem depending on the network available to me at the time.

But if I had a 4g signal available, would buffering be a problem???

I have read that AirPort Extreme might be what I'm after to remotely access the mac.

There's your problem, assuming your superhub is providing both modem and router functions. Get a better router, stick DD-WRT on it and place the superhub into modem mode. Then you can do certain port forwards to stream media. However - streaming FROM your home connection requires a decent upload speed if you want HD with a big bitrate. 3-5Mb/s is the average and you'll just get buffering on bigger files.

I can do most stuff away from home, almost all my computers run TeamViewer, VNC, have SMB/FTP enabled etc so I can remotely tinker, I can log into the router and play around with settings too. Very useful. Even the XBMC remote apps on my Android phone work across 3G without being on the home WiFi so I can push YouTube videos and stuff across, technically I could tell anyone in my household to switch the TV/amp to the HTPC and push a video across for them to watch anywhere in the world. Loads of stuff like that. And Wake On WAN is good too, a sleeping computer can be given a nudge remotely so I can pull/push files. Could write pages on what I have going with my home network.

Would that be possible if I added an AirPort Extreme to the superhub and forced the superhub into modem mode?? (I maght be able to get my hands on one cheap).

the virgin superhub is actually not that bad. imo much better than the offerings from sky and BT.

You can set up port forwarding rules on the virgin superhub. All you need to do is set up a port forwarding rule so that plex requests are forwarded the computer that is hosting your plex server.

The one issue you most likely run into is your upload speed is going to be notoriously slow on a virgin connection. I get 60Mb down but only 1.5Mb up. You might need to configure your plex server to re sample your videos to a lower bit rate.

I expect so. I don't rate the Superhub as a router, it's very basic and the menu system for my own Superhub 2 is horrible, not for advanced users at all. Whereas an AirPort Extreme is more like a proper SOHO router. Pretty sure it doesn't do all the advanced stuff a DD-WRT flashed router would be it's a start, depends how far you want to go with it all really. I wanted the equivalent of corporate level router features in a small home router, and that's what I've had for about five years.

You're so full of shit.

The VM Hub is a decent bit of kit that can easily handle what you are trying to do.
Sure it had a bad rep when they 1st launched it but those problems have been resolved.

There was a bit of software a couple of years back called ORB which was bloody awesome.
It done exactly what you wanted it to do, and thats why i loved it.
Full media catalogue indexed and made available for you where ever you were.

I've seen the word "Subsonic" being thrown about over the past few months and some people say it is very flexible and a great alternative since the shut down of ORB.

Might be worth checking out

So you spout shit because it is geared towards being easy to use by those who just want something that works?

Agreed, the upload speed from the source to the download speed of the destination make a huge difference.

No, actually I'm not. Just cos I'm not doing things your way doesn't mean I'm doing it the wrong way. Fair enough, last time we discussed XBMC and NFS I was being a bit cocky, this time it's my opinion and believe me it's NOT shit.

If the Superhub routing functions are so good, tell me exactly how I can configure it to do Wake on WAN like I can quite easily on a DD-WRT router, where it takes external magic packets to a dummy IP/MAC address and internally forwards them correctly to the LAN broadcast address. Last time I checked this was next to impossible to do on consumer grade SOHO routers with OEM firmware.

Yes it is, and I'm not disputing that. But "easy to use" isn't helping the OP here is it, when he wants to be able to do more advanced stuff reliably. If you'd concentrate on that rather than bashing the advice I'm giving him and trying to derail this thread into a flame war or whatever it is you're trying to achieve maybe it'd get a bit further.

You're being the dick here, not me. I'm trying to help based on my experience, you're calling me a dick because apparently your experience is more valid than mine. You seem hell bent on proving you're "the guy" with tech so maybe only you should be allowed to answer questions in the geek zone, eh? Rather than posters here getting advice from all sides and deciding what works for them.

Not everyone wants to WOL.
The common home user will not even know what WOL is, let alone want to use it.

As a modem/router for the common home user the VM Hub is top notch.

Just because it doesn't have the bells and whistles you want it to have doesn't mean it's shit nor does it mean the OP will be have problems streaming through it.

You are being a the dick here, a shrivelled up infected dick.

My experience is based on my time working for Virginmedia as a 2nd & 3rd line BBI tech.

Thanks for playing.

Maybe the OP doesn't have his Mac Mini on all the time, did you consider that?

And I see you haven't answered my question because Wake On WAN can't be done on the Superhub, right?

I didn't say it was shit either, not sure where you got that from. I said "get a better router" i.e. to make more advanced stuff easy to do, and that "I don't rate the Superhub because it's basic". I didn't say it was shit, though it certainly was when it was released, I was on the beta tester pool for VM for a short time after the first one was released.

I'm not the one dismissing everything someone else says out of hand when it's perfectly valid technical advice, and putting words in other peoples mouths. Like I said just because it's not the way YOU'D do it doesn't make it wrong.

Not everyone keeps their HTPCs on all the time, hence being able to remotely wake them up to get at the media stored there is useful. The OP might need that feature, better to have it and not need it.

Right, so that straight away makes you biased towards Virgin Media products doesn't it. What it doesn't make you is the be all, end all authority on everything tech here on BCF, so stop throwing your weight around like it does and accept that there are different ways of doing things that work better for other people.

HAHAHAHAHA

You bought into the "be the first to have uber speeds" bullshit.

That wasn't a "beta test" it was a "field trial" where they monitored your modem from the NOC and other sites based in the UK.

Dude, you're an idiot.

SO yeah, excuse me for paying attention to the original post, but he does need WOL doesn't he. And with Wake on WAN a browser bookmark or simple WOL app on a smartphone can do this with a click or two.

But that's because you are too busy spouting pointless, redundant, incorrect info.

Nopes, I have my hub in modem mode because I NEED to use other features that are not available to me otherwise.

But for the basic use, like what the OP wants, the Hub is more than capable.

No I'm a nob, it clearly says that in my screen-name. I have to say, it beats being a stuck up, pious, self-righteous name calling flame war starting type like yourself, who's pretty much totally ruined this thread because you just have to be right and prove me wrong. The OP is going to come back to all this and not know what to make of it.

Whatever man. Life's too short for this nonsense. You go ahead and singlehandedly solve the OP's problem cos I have better things to do than continue to waste time arguing the toss with you in this thread.

OK..... this thread can be summed up as follows:

1) OP needs to forward a port, and perhaps open the firewall on his host machine.

2) OP does not need to change his router, buy a new router, use open source firmware or any of that bull.

3) OP may need to set up a DDNS service depending on what he is trying to achieve (given that he has a dynamic IP from VM)

and 4)...

I work for a direct competitor of VM, and i agree wholeheartedly with everything CaNsA has said.

.. the end.
