Today was mostly spent sitting in a car park and then driving like loons on public roads

I'll post my videos later, but as a preview:

^This.

I've expected to see good old disc brakes made from materials which we haven't heard about yet, but not that. Smile

Not as close as I got in 1978 to Andretti. Pushed the car back into the clubhouse at Lotus after the parade lap and exhibition in Norwich.

Old fella used to spray the black n golds hence the kids got to get close. Have Peterson's and other autographs..... a golden age....

They are carbon discs (270mm iirc) with huge 6 piston calipers & carbon pads. What you can see are intricate cooling hubs to keep them from exploding.

Why does an E21 have Crashtor Maldonado's name on it?

Ahh, one of my very own babies.

All of the showcars are repainted to the current livery unless they're 'museum' type pieces, such as the plethora of Benettons, Renaults and Lotuses around the world and at our factory.

Also, Clarkson drove a T120 Lotus; a track car that loosely resembles an F1 car but is made by the Lotus car company rather than the F1 team. Yours to own for a few hundred grand at one time.

Nope - that's the Lotus e20 the actual 2012 f1 car.

What was it doing on a trackday? Laughing

I realise that's a lotus... I, however, was driving my Caterham at the same event.

Only got a French link for now - pic 17 is me...

I fell asleep before I got round to cutting a vid together, I'll do it tonight.

Indeed, featuring more aero, and a cosworth V8 rather than the Renault unit in the F1 car. /anorak

How about these then

I'm surprised F1 hasn't moved towards multiple rotor/stator packs.

I guess even with the ridiculous grip the tyres offer their current brakes can still lock, so anything more powerful is unnecessary and weight would be undesirable.

Maybe if ABS was allowed. But the negative acceleration (deceleration/retardation) already possible on F1 cars is mad

They have, but there's a limit on how much stored power they are allowed to use.

Huh? You've confused me now.

Stored power?

I'm on about brakes, not braking from KERS/MGUK generators.

In the A340 brake packs above you have multiple rotors (moving/rotating brake material, discs if you like) and multiple stators (non-moving brake material, pads essentially) and these are pressed together for the braking. It's like having multiple pads and discs per axle. Except the "pads" have a much greater friction area on the discs.

The larger surface area would only increase retardation through frictional braking if the braking force was increased as well. As it can't be increased, due to the regs covering servo assistance, line pressure etc. then it wouldn't matter how many pads and discs you had per wheel the overall friction would remain the same.

Therefore, weight is king and using that contraption would just add unsprung mass.

But brakes work by converting kinetic energy into thermal energy via friction.

They need to dissipate the heat already generated in order to absorb the "next lot of heat" and if they can't do that they reach their limit and can't convert any more kinetic energy into thermal energy. Brake fade.

Larger surface area means a greater spread of heat and better dissipation, so whilst frictional force is not necessarily directly improved, in the long run it is less prone to deterioration.

With the MGU-K in Formula 1 now the rear brakes are tiny in comparison to what they used to have and in the event of loss of MGU-K braking, the rear brakes have been shown to fail as a result
