24GB RAM

My PC has 16gb of RAM in a configuration of 2x 8gb. I've come across a few 4gb sticks of RAM and was wondering if it would work/be worth it if I banged those extra sticks in taking me to a total of 24gb?

I know RAM is supposed to be paired for best effect, but I'd have 2 pairs in effect.

Or shall I just sell it all on ebay?

To answer your question though, yes it should work fine. 24GB is a bit overkill though.

They're pretty old, PC2 5300F it says on the packet. I don't know much about that sort of thing, but bigger numbers are better, right?

It's all brand new in box still, we're packing up the computer systems we've got out here and there was a box of unused upgrade parts, not on accounts (civvy owned) and likely to be binned, so I grabbed (was given) a load. Figured I might as well, even to bung it in my PC, sell it or give away to any friends/family who need some more RAM.

It'll only work properly if it matches the speed of your current RAM - IIRC, RAM tends to be slowed down to match the slowest component, so if your current RAM is faster, then it'll drop the speed accordingly.

Is there a RAM test program to benchmark what I'm running? The RAM I have installed currently is new and pretty good, much better than the free stuff I found, so is 24gb ever going to be worse than 16gb?

Do you actually use all of your 16gb? If you don't, you'll just get a slight performance hit by throwing that stuff in.

Indeed, when you already have 16GB your CPU is a more likely bottleneck.
Looking in task manager on my (16GB) desktop - while chugging away rendering a 1080p video the CPU is bouncing to the max but RAM barely tops 10GB

The cheap PC I bought a little while ago had a 2gb stick in one of the 2 slots.
I've just maxed it out with a pair of matched 2gb sticks and I thought I was doing well.

Only add it if you are using more than 12gb of RAM, more RAM won't add more speed unless youre going to use it.

Press CTRL, SHIFT ESC, to bring up performance monitor, and monitor your RAM usage over a period of time.

I only go past 8gb when I run a load of virtual machines. I've got 24gb in my pc, but rarely need the last 8gb or so

install the extra ram and then ram disc and run some software from there. in this situation more is better as you can allocate more to software, I would aim to keep at least 8gig for the system though

how many of your programs are true 64bit?

If you use a lot of 32bit programs more ram will allow you to multitask/ run more programs at once, but won't help programs that are running up against their 2gb ceiling (chrome does this often then hangs). To help these you need to set the large address aware flag for the .exe.

If the program is capable it will now be able to use the full 4gb address space/virtual memory a 32 bit system would have been limited to as their is no 2gb~2gb kernel mode/ user mode split needed for the emulated 32bit environment on a 64 bit system freeing all the 4gb address space for the program to use.

You would be surprised how much smoother memory hungry programs run when not limited to 2gb address space per instance.

For anyone on a 32 bit system you can still benefit from setting the large address aware flag for memory hungry programs, but to to do so you need to increase the user mode memory allocation by setting the 3gb switch and the pae switch to your boot.ini (IncreaseUserVA in bcdedit for vista and above).

your programs will benefit but the o/s will be limited to use the remaining 1gb address space, so will page more.
