Anyone recommend something decent but not too expensive?

OK, seriously...

Was looking at these Interphone Bluetooth sets a while back, never got round to buying them but there are reviews of them on Amazon if you look. Not bad for £50ish a pair.

I'm sure people on here are using them.

I own and use one of those in link above

Pros: inexpensive, good battery life, bluetooth to phone for music and calls with good clarity, simple easy controls for volume, skipping and answering/ending calls, think it gets the claimed 800m range (I've never measured it but good enough if you stick with your mate) however...

Cons: ... has to be line of sight (a farm building will make you sound like a 56k modem), weak bass (I advise a quiet helmet to match for music). Says it will pair with up to 3/6 other intercoms. LIES my other friend bought one and we had to switch between who was the lucky pair that could chat.

All said, is a great intro to bike comms. It certainly opened mine and my mates eyes to how social biking can be and now I'm looking at spending more money and getting something more upmarket

I have the same set, mine works fine through objects though as tested with the mrs going upstairs (3 floors) while I was out in the car park and still nice and clear, not used bike to bike as we use it when she's pillion, though she'll be getting her own bike shortly

How is the biker to biker intercom activated?

Voice or push to talk?

I use a Scala Rider set on my touring lid. I'm very happy with the system, but it isn't what you'd call cheap!

the device has 2 buttons, one is for phone answering/music controls (with dial around it for volume/track changing) and a smaller button at the front which turns on the unit to unit comms, which when i'm using I just leave turned on as the battery lasts around 8 hours of constant use

Never believe the quoted range on the bluetooth sets. Its all lies. Me and a mate use Cardo Scala Q2 Pros, and they are decent enough, just a few niggles (unable to use headphones, has a strange automated volume system that can't be turned off) - but these are very old, the new ones fixed the problems including nifty headphone sockets. Battery life is absolutely excellent. I didn't use mine for roughly 18 months, when I found it again, it STILL had about 2 hours use left in it. Amazeballs.

The Autocom systems are the best in the market, no doubt - but perhaps not as convenient because they have a control box you have to put under the seat, and they are a bit more costly. But, you have so many different options you can use with them, and they can be powered off the bike so no messing about charging e.t.c.

I bought this set 18 months ago:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003QATNJU/

Has been excellent!!
So much so my father, brother, and 3 friends have got them also now.

The fact its a proper radio works great, on open roads we can get a good mile away from each other and still speak, obviously less round a built up city.

The vox is good up to 70 ish, but for weekend blasts we use PTT and that works very well.

For £30 a rider ahs been a great buy.
My missus has one for when she is pillion also, and it works fine.
