PostPosted: 04:36 - 04 Sep 2014    Post subject: Keys - first world problems Reply with quote

After owning a Chinese bike a few years ago, I'm always listening for rattling from my bikes, as that one used to shit it's bolts out going down the road all the time.

Because of this I hate having a bunch of keys hanging from the ignition and jingling/rattling away against the handlebars.

So I'm just wondering what you all do? Is anyone else even bothered by this?

Main reason is that at the minute my solution is; split ring on each key, then all kept on a caribina(sp?). The problem with this though is I've now developed an annoying habit of leaving the key in the ignition and walking off.

Because the rest of the keys are in my pocket, and difficult to get into with gloves in, my current method is; Park, turn ignition off, take gloves off, forget key, walk off, come back hours later, frantically look for the right key, notice key and swear not to do it again. I feel there are probably better methods..

I use a BUNGEE CORD Which I attatch the other end to the bars so you can see it.

Get into the habit of putting the steering lock on. means you will take the key out.

That might work, perhaps a brightly coloured one, or clip on to a zip on the jacket, that way I physically can't forget.

As for the steering lock, the only bike I do it on is the Honda Cm, it's an old bike, with mismatched keys so the key can still be in the ignition, and I rarely bother locking it up anyway if I'm honest.

My ignition key is on a separate ring along with my U-lock key, so when I stop the key has to come out of the ignition barrel to put the U-lock on, then the two keys on their ring get attached to my main key ring and put in my jacket pocket.

The carabina method for me.
And if you're worried about leaving keys behind, you could always attach something bright like a disk lock reminder to your keys??

My ignition barrel consists of two bullet connectors that I connect to turn the ignition on, I should sort it out but I'm not really loving the bike to be honest so fuck it.

yes it bothered me so I now only use the ignition key with no rings/fobs on it. I keep the rest of my keys separate in my pocket

I had a bandit that had the same set up for about 6 months! Every morning when I opened the front door and saw nobody has stolen it I was a little disappointed.

This use a caribina if you want everything kept together.

This also stops you scratching the buggery out of the yoke.

Carabiner. Just wanted to add that to the thread.

I keep my ignition key separate from my other keys. When it's fitted, I add a top-box key to the ignition key. When touring, I also add a disc lock key.

I keep my keys in a leather key wallet, as otherwise they wear holes in the liner of my jacket pockets.

I wear a round the neck lanyard thingy like this

https://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v1/426643754/500pcs-lot-whole-sale-font-b-mass-b-font-production-good-luster-printed-neck-lanyard-neck.jpg
and keep all my keys separate. I carry my disc lock and key under the seat at all times anyway
and add the key to the lanyard if I use the lock, apart from that I keep the key to my panniers
and the keys to my house separate and the key to my bike has no fob and add to each the bunch as required.

The area around the ignition is part of the tank on the newer ER6fs so is painted. There was already slight damage
from the previous owner so that's what prompted me to keep the key loose.

Rattling... oh you never want to buy a Honda then.

They come with a rattly clutch as standard. Laughing

You could always cut out a piece of felt a thick piece and cable tie it to your top clamp as well.

How quiet is your engine, that you can hear your keys rattling?

I've got a 125 and have a few keys attached on the same keyring as the ignition key and I don't hear them rattle over the noise of the bike.

Maybe I'm going deaf. Thinking

Have tried these, for similar reasons, but haven't found one practical enough for my bunch. With the CM125 being my daily runabout I end up carrying 3 for that (mismatched; ignition, tank & steering lock) 1 for the top box if I have that on, alarmed padlock key, house key, 2 garage keys & 5 keys for work. That's 13 keys at a minimum on any given day.

I think about 90% of the bikes I buy are Honda, it's not rattling I'm listening for, it's unexpected rattling haha.

On my key ring I've got two front door keys, two garage keys, a key to my mum's front door, two top box keys, a pannier key, a U-lock key, a set of nail clippers, a box holding 4 ear plugs, a metal Motorhead tag, an Araby type coin with a hole in the centre, an Egyptian coin, the ID tag from the dog I owned as a kid and then attached on a dog lead type connector one of my bike keys or a car key.

I tend to wear out the pocket linings in my bike jackets.

I actually find, at low speed (like there's any other option) the Honda CM125 is actually really quiet for a 125, so it is quite noticeable. It's got a much lower than standard seat & bars too, so the ignition is fairly close to my face which makes it more noticeable I guess

I'm not a fan of too many keyrings to be honest, adds too much bulk to an already overcrowded keyring, I have a bottle opener and a retractable micro USB cable but that's it.
What I listed was just the daily bunch. The main set is probably about 15-20 bike keys, 10-12 topbox/pannier keys, 8 different bike lock keys, 5 toolbox keys, 5 shed/garage keys, maybe another 5 for friends/family door keys, and about 5 others that I forget what they are, but occasionally come in handy when I find there's a lock I haven't used in a while. Then there's the "spares" set. I may have a problem...

Seperate keys - Bike key has one of they loom band design thingys on it that's red so I cant miss it.
Normal keys have : house key, aunties key, tescos club card, disc lock key ( so I always have to remember my house keys) and a wee clip thing.

All mine on that bunch get used a lot, daren't remove the pannier or top box keys as you can fit the things without them which means I'd be stuck with locked boxes, possibly with stuff in I wanted at my destination.

I have other keys which don't come out with me because they aren't used much.

The coins and other stuff is my protection against falling off, like a footballer tying his laces in a particular order before a match. I used to have the piece of tail light that I found in the fins of my engine after a car lost control, came straight at me at high speed as I waited to pull onto a mini roundabout, only to bury it's engine block into the lamp post a few metres from me and come to a total stop. The lamp post glazing fell in pieces over my head, a KLB went over the top of me and landed on the roof of the car behind me. I found the tail light fragment whilst working on the bike a few days later. It disappeared from my key ring about 10 years ago.

But if asked, I will of course deny being superstitious.

snap, my ignition packed up nearly two years ago (plastic peg underneath broke off)

I keep losing my switches and little bits of wire and mooching round for metal stuff to poke in the plug socket.
