Bought a brand new CBF125 from the local Honda dealer on 15th August.

Been using it for commuting to work and rides at weekends.

As i was going on a ride this Sunday, i decided to check the oil level.... never bothered to check before, after all its a new bike etc etc

NO oil registered on the dipstick at all!

Not sure if i was doing this right, i took it off the main stand and checked again with both wheels on level ground.
Still no oil!
I went out and bought a litre of synthetic oil and topped up, several times before it appeared on the stick :/

I left it to settle and now it seems i have a bit too much in :/
So i started the engine and let it idle for a couple of mins and turned off.
I will wait and check the level again in a few mins.

Now either the dealer didnt fill it up with oil properly or for some reason its burning oil? Its only done 250 miles too.

Just thought i would share here to let other new bikers know that they need to check oil even on a new bike.

For all i know i could have done some long term damage to my bike, just because i trusted the dealer.

hopefully when i check it reads the correct level now.... or i guess i will have to drain some back out Rolling Eyes

If you have put a touch too much in try and get hold of something like a syringe with a length of hose and suck the excess oil back out of the filler hole. Sod's Law says you'll wanker the drain plug letting it out of the bottom if you go that route.

Has it had its first service yet? I'm guessing not, as you don't mention it, because the running-in oil may be a lower viscosity and could burn off more easily. Unless you've noticed any oil spots under the bike I'd guess that's where you've lost any.

Aren't these bikes known for potentially burning a bit of oil? Just keep an eye on the level. Remember, it's a cheap bike made for mass market around the world relying on Honda's fading reputation for well made bikes.

No its not had its first service, thats at 600 miles i am told.

And there is no oil spots under bike, its parked on nice white concrete, so it would be easily spotted

How much oil does the bike hold? If it's only a litre or so I'd just drop the lot and refill with fresh. An early oil change on a new bike won't do it any harm, probably a good idea in fact.

As above. A really good quality oil will only cost you a fiver or so. No point messing

Your gonna love this (the wife wont LOL)

i used a variation on Nexus Icon's method.

I used the basting sucky thing she uses for making roast potatoes and stuck a straw in the end, i then managed to suck out 150ml into a jug hahah

Its now on Max level Smile

@TheBaldReverend
Good idea, i will change the oil after todays ride out, i think it holds 1.1lr and recommends 900ml on a change, as it doesnt all come out apparently :/

@arry
I paid £15 for 1ltr at the shell garage last night

If it's on the max level now I'd just leave it until the service, checking the level every now and then and topping up if necessary.

Go to Halfords and get a 5L bottle of the part synthetic oil, no need to be spending £15 per litre.

Nice one.

Personally I'd wait until the first service is done rather than change that oil out for more, just keep a closer eye on the level. Some people check every ride but once a week is plenty unless you're racking up loads of miles.

Enjoy the bike!

Well done, it is possible to damage an engine by adding too much oil to a silly extent. This can happen when people 'can't see' clean oil through the sight glass.

A guy who bought one of my previous bikes thought it needed topping up until level with the filler cap Rolling Eyes
It wouldn't even turn over.
How we did larrf Doh!

My CBF used to burn oil, I used to have to top it up every 200miles-ish.

IRIC the CBF holds about 900ml oil, so if you've over filled just drop the old oil and wack some new oil in.

I used to check the oil on my CBF by putting it on its centre stand on level ground, let the bike idle for like 3 mins, then switch it off, let it cool down for 3mins then check the oil level. I believe the manual said to do the same but with different time intervals.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone to check the oil on my CBF125 to find a dry dipstick. The bike burns oil quite quickly and there's only a few ml between min and max.

Well ive just returned from my day out on the bike, i covered 160 miles up and down hills (Cat and Fiddle area)

Came home let bike cool off and checked oil.

Exactly what i set off with, so i really do think the Honda dealer sent this bike out without enough oil in it Rolling Eyes

Please pass the word on to any new bike buyers, to do the normal checks even when brand new.
Could save tears later (and money)

I think I'll probably just go Yamaha instead. Wink

More fluxing stellar work by Honda dealers. Early CBFs had fuel pump failures reportedly because dealers were meant to flush out an anti-corrosion coating inside the tank, but weren't bothering.

Good work on catching it. Thumbs Up

I see what you did there Smile

You are checking the oil level with the bike upright, and not cocked over on the side-stand, aren't you?

Unless it says differently in the manual, you need to do this.

When my bike has the correct amount of oil, and then I park it on the side-stand, the oil level disappears below the bottom of the sight glass!

Centre Stand is usually fine if you are on level ground.

On mine, the front wheel lifts about 3" off the ground, but if I push the front down so that the back wheel is off the ground, there's no difference in the oil sight glass.

If you are not losing oil on a 160 mile run, I would say the bike is fine - but don't trust the dealer!

FWIW my cbf only burnt oil during the first 300 miles or so (bedding in?) after that, 9000 miles of nothing. I did change it every 1000 though.

and I always kept it overfilled by 5mm or so. seemed safer.

Get an old washing up dish, put it under the bike, undo the sump bolt on the bottom of the engine, have a cup of tea, replace sump bolt (make sure the washer is there too) fill with 0.9L of oil.

You'll then have the right amount of oil in, without buggering about
