PostPosted: 20:15 - 10 Sep 2014    Post subject: Registering Spanish Bike in UK Questions Reply with quote

I am hoping someone can offer advice on a bike that i have seen advertised.

Its a 2006 CBF250 but the owner states.

Honda CBF250. I bought this used in Spain and it goes just fine, no problems at all. It has a scratch on the tank (you should see it in the photo). I can only think someone dropped their scooter in to one night when it was parked up.

I have brought this back to the UK with the intention of putting it on to UK plates. After sending all the documents I had off to the DVLA I discovered that I don't have the certificate of conformity. The DVLA have told me I should be able to get this from Honda but I just don't have the time.

It has passed it's UK MoT back in February ish this year. It's in Km not miles.

Is he telling me every thing i need to know?

What paperwork will I need to get my hands on a UK V5?

I like to have a gamble so i might just make a cheeky offer tomorrow. And buy it blind and sort out all the shiz after.

My major concerns are:-

1.Getting hold of the UK V5
2.Insurance companies not insuring an import?
3. Random shiz that comes up.

I can change the headlight easily enough so thats not an issue.

As long as i dont pay much more than its worth in scrap its not that much of a gamble i guess.

How can it have had a a UK MOT in February if its not on the DVLA database? mmmmmmm.........

Here's how I'd value it.

Start with the average price of a 2006 CBF260.

Subtract £170 for one of the 2 frames + logbooks on eBay.

Subtract 1/3rd because they'll be write-offs.

Subtract another 1/3rd because it's got no history, is in km, the frame and engine numbers won't match, and it'll be a massive ongoing ball-ache to own, insure and sell on.

A cheeky offer would be to tell the chap you'll remove his liability from him for a surprisingly reasonable fee.

A reasonable offer would be to take it away it free and gratis.

If the type approval no is stamped on the frame tag it /may/ be possible without contacting Honda??

Place I work used to occasionally import vehicles from the channel isles

Paperwork I used to have to take to DVLA local office (when they existed) used to include a certificate of conformity (CoC)...snigger

the bit they needed to see/know from looking at the CoC was the type approval number (starts E1* if I recall correctly)

Surely a photo or visual inspection of the plated approval info is enough info for them to fill in the form??

I guess now that local offices are no more its not going to be as straight forward to do
The amount of vehicles we get from Johnny foreigner dried up a while back so I'm out of touch

Calling DVLA could well lead you to a different answer to the problem each time you call

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/vat-and-tax-vehicles-from-within-the-eu

has it all in black and white however for some bedtime reading...zzzzzzzzzz

Good luck

Regards
Rob

I thought most people from the EU just don't bother registering their vehicles here even if they intend to stay longer than 6 months (?)

I know the DVSA is trying to find a way to crack down on it.

Just enjoy some ticket free riding :p

You can get a certificate of conformity from Honda if you contact them with the VIN number. This might either be free or they might charge you £120 for a photocopy.

I wouldn't have thought the DVLA would have any way of knowing or caring if there way money owing on it in Spain.

Right,

I ignored everyone's advice and bought it.

Its a 2006 CBF125 Mint mechanically but does have a scratch on the tank where a scooter handlebars were dropped on it.

Its got 2 good tyres and 6 months worth of UK MOT even with the foreign plate.

The guy had a Spanish MOT certificate from last year, and the Spanish equivalent of a logbook(v5), 2 keys, Spanish owners manual and thats it.

The Guy has completed the NOVA (Notification Of Vehicle Arrival) and no import tax is owed on the bike.

I have confirmed that i can get a COC from Honda for Free using the VIN and the DVLA have confirmed that once they have the COC they will issue me with a V5.

Seems too simple.

this is off the honda site:-

Certificate of Conformity

If your motorcycle is younger than June 2003 then you should be able to apply using your VIN for a COC (certificate of conformity) - these can be posted directly to you, there is no charge for this service. Please email us at customer.servicemc@honda-eu.com including your full VIN number and your address details. We expect these to be posted with 5-7 working days.

I pick it up in a few days and requested the import papers from the DVLA that will come in the post. I need to complete these and return with the COC and all should be fine and dandy

Very Happy

R6 is getting swapped for something a bit newer but similar

WR250F is getting swapped for something a bit newer but similar

CBF250 is going to be used for my 12 mile round trip to work each date. The thinking is i liked the YBR125 i had to commute but it lacked power so the CBF250 should be a bit better.

So.........

I collected the bike tonight and after spending a few hours cleaning it everything seems fine.

No rust or damage and mechanically it pretty fresh. I just need to replace the tank as it has a big scratch on the R/H side.

I applied to Honda tonight for a Certificate of conformity so hopefully it should arrive next week so i can forward it to the DVLA.

What numberplate will the bike be issued with? Will the DVLA try to give it a plate that matches the bikes age?

What will the UK V5 say on it? Will it say no previous owners? Will it mention that its imported?

What will the insurance companies think when i try and insure it?

Anyway, photos

I cant wait to ride it. Its only £47 a year TPFT insurance which is a bonus.

I have always fancied a small capacity bike Very Happy

Crikey, that looks unused. The rain in Spain stayed mainly well away from that.

Right after spending until 3 last night/morning working on the bike i decided to start again on the bike today.

First i started off with T-cutting all the bodywork as it was covered in light scratches everywhere. I then built up 3 layers of polish.

and it now looks shiney

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_153626_zpsc8e9f807.jpg

I then painted the down pipes

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_153756_zps5b86da2f.jpg

Polished the headlight glass to get rid of the light scratches

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_153744_zpse006b239.jpg

Cleaned the rims

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_153657_zpsddbd9ea8.jpg

Removed the tank to give it a proper clean and check over

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_132445_zps5cd3f83c.jpg

No rust, yay

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20140913_131639_zps515ffcc5.jpg

This is the scratch to the tank that i want to try and make look better. Its all the way through the lacquer but not the paint. mmmmmm......

Toolkit missing?

Looks absolutely stunning!

AFAIK they do put something along the lines of it being imported on the V5 ...think its in the "special notes" bit on the front cover (2 of mine have "registered overseas" or similar wording - can't be arsed to dig through the paperwork mountain- but will if your really that curious)

Reg they give should be age related - V5 will have something along the lines of 'approx year of first use' as well IIRC

Hope it all goes swimmingly for you

I found that the clutch is dragging a bit but, meh.

I posted a question about it in the workshop section.

Yer its cleaned up nice, It very fresh mechanically due to only covering 7k and it does not look like its seen rain which is a bonus.

Thanks for the info anyway. Thumbs Up

I think its easily worth the £750 i paid for it anyway. I think that would just about get you a new iphone these days.

Right,

I now have nearly everything i need to register the bike.

1.) fill in application for v5 done
2.) Write cheque for £55 for registration fee and £38 for a years tax.
3) Provide Honda Certificate of conformity
4.) Provide copy of spanish V5
5) provide proof of NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrival)
6) Provide Proof import tax has been paid if required
Provide proof the bike has passed a UK MOT (yup 6 months ago)

Once the DVLA have received the above i will be getting a letter telling me that the Certificate of Conformity states that the bike is fine to be used on the R/H side of the road only and the clocks are in kph (this is waht it says on the certificate of conformity) bollocks!!!!

I will need to stick some MPH markers on the clocks and buy a deflector sticker for the headlight that will redirect the light slightly.

Once this is done i will have book a special partial vehicle inspection test at one of about 7 test centres in the UK so they can look at the clocks and say yes it shows MPH and Yes the headlight aim is fine.

This Test is £12.00 but............. the test centre is a long way away from me and i cant ride the bike until its passed the test. Bollocks.

So it looks like i will have to pop it in a van.

Thats where i am up to so far.............

My clocks currently in KPH only

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20141006_174524_zpsae829db6.jpg

My headlight which currently seems to have a light pattern that aims directly straight and not onto oncoming traffic.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20141006_174501_zps0d7106c1.jpg

Headlight Info...... What does this number mean?

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/20141006_174447_zps836e29db.jpg
