Thinking of getting myself a cheap ebayer tiger as a winter project / comfy bike next year and the tiger is on my mind. Quite fancy a cheap adventure / light off-road bike to have a play with...

Older tigers seem to be going for <1500££ so I'm tempted to pick one up..

Firstly anything major to look out for, and secondly I've already seen one advertised on the bay with know sprag gear/clutch issues??

Something I can do in the garage? Likely cost? Or a complete bitch and major expense??

I had a 955 for a year or two, it was fantastic! Absolutely brilliant all round bike, my only gripe was the standard screen was WANK and needs to be replaced for a rather expensive aftermarket (or make a big one yourself), and the front forks are too soft for anything spirited. Factor in the cost of springs and heavier oil if it hasn't already been done. The engine though... ooft - don't get me started. Its fantastic. One of the nicest engines i've ever experienced, I found it nicer than the 1050 in my Sprint ST!

The 855s are supposed to be very good too, some prefer them to the "Girlies" (955) as they're known. There is a forum called TigerTriple which will help you immensely. Good luck!

Found whilst researching the 955 because I briefly considered a older Speed Triple recently until I sat on a certain lighter more nimbler 3 cylinder..........

Unless you're Jean Michel Bayle, you ain't going off road on one of these. 885 steamer motor sprag is a complete stripdown job, budget a grand for shop to do it.

Post 2002 955i engines in Sprints had a similar problem https://www.bikersoracle.com/triumphsprint/forum/showthread.php?t=1949&highlight=crank Not sure if Tigers are immune but may be worth bearing in mind.

I loved my Tiger 955i.

I bought it cheap, sold for a large profit and always regretted getting rid of it.

One of the comfiest bikes I have had.

I've not owned one but I've ridden the 800Xc and the 1050, both of which were like riding armchairs.

Thats not quite true, there was a tour in 2008 called poor circulation where two blokes went round the world on Triumph tigers.

If they managed the horror that was Kansk to Irkutsk (I did it on my XT600E and found it horrible).

As well as the Ulan Ude to Khabavosk when the road was only 20% complete (I passed it when the road was 55% complete).

Then it can off road.
