On my way to work yesterday I noticed a patch of sand a builder kind of person had managed to spill on the road.

The corner in question is one that I take everyday on my way to work. Somehow I just managed to miss the patch of sand, but I know I could have stayed well clear of it if I just cranked it over. How do you go about avoiding stuff on the road when you're looking at it? How do you avoid being sucked into to driving at the obstancle you're looking at? When filtering through the middle of cars, you can spot your obstancles in the corner of your eye to make sure you're not going to hit anything while looking at the clear tunnel ahead of you.

You stop looking at it. Actively force your mind to look at a different patch on the road or some other obstacle elsewhere. I do this to avoid potholes sometimes, looking next to them instead of at them helps.

'Target Fixation' can be used to your advantage - once you have spotted an obstacle in your path, fix your sight on the safe path around it.

Don't look at it.

There is no other answer.

Close your eyes and use the force. What's the worst that could happen?

If you know the road well, you know what corners are where and how fast can you go through them, then go fast. If you do not know the road, don't be a hero and quit speeding everywhere. Thumbs Up

Peripheral vision is a part of vision that occurs outside the very center of gaze.
This is a fantastic thing that is very good at picking stuff up.

In fact its so good something moving in your Peripheral vision will be picked up more than something straight in front of you.

Don't stare down that tunnel. RELAX (As Frankie said)

can you honestly say you do that? I can't, not with smaller objects. If there are things like cars, a clowder of kittens then it's easy to look somewhere else as, like someone else said they move to your peripheral vision. Much smaller 'objects' I find it impossible to move away from.

Breaking target fixation is tough. I've been finding that I corner better if I'm staring at the horizon, I naturally seem to look there, where I want to go, and the corners are smoother and more controlled than if I'm only staring a few feet ahead concentrating too hard on the apex. The bike almost rides itself when I concentrate further ahead, past that corner, past any obstacles, it almost seems too easy. The benefit is because I'm looking as far ahead as I can I'm seeing potential dangerous situations way before I normally would, this obviously means it's not only smoother but safer as well.
