Mmkay so this is pretty subjective and I've been in a few discussions with some mates who ride, I'm very fussy about my preference. Do you prefer digital or analog dash setup, or a mix of both?

I've heard things like "digital speedometers are not accurate to the nth degree" and whatnot, and I'm curious what you guys prefer on a bike in terms of analog/digital tach/speedo, gear counters or no gear counters etc.

Personally I don't like digital tachometers at all, so I like an analog tach and a digital speedo. Also don't like the idea of a gear counter even though we got them on the pizza bikes. My 125 with all that constant shifting everywhere got me used to not having to think about which gear I'm in (could sort of just tell after a while) so a gear counter would be kind of useless. My pizza bike at work doesn't even have a tachometer and uses analog speedo Thumbs Down

What do you prefer BCF?

Sort of with Pinky on this one.
And TBH in my dotage, I am starting to find empathy with the old-boys of my youth who made such comments as 'Just a distraction', or ' if you need to ask how fast your going.... you're going too fast!' or 'Why do you want to know how many revs the engine's doing? You can hear it cant you? Tells you more than a tacho that!"
Other than the constant threat of scamera boxes..think I could quite happily live without a dash.

I've only ever had analog dials on bikes, but I had a digital speed on a previous car. I got used to it, but I prefer the ability to glance at an analog dial and get an idea of the reading from the needle deflection, without having to actually READ it. You have to read a digital output, and if it is changing quickly then it is less easy to read.

Having Analogue both on 1 bike and Digital speedo and Analogue rev counter I'd say I prefer the Latter.

Just to add, The digital part has to be of a decent size though not like a tiny display hidden in the corner somewhere.

Depends on the execution and how well it works really IMO.
And undamped needle is just as annoying as flickering up and down digital digits.

For the look of quality I'd say a dash needs to be big. Tiny minimalist dash's always look like they either weren't interested or don't care about providing you with information I'd say.

Good point pinky and tef about not looking down at the clocks and it being a distraction. I admittedly tend to speed 100% of the time if I don't look at the clocks and I'm ahead of any traffic. Not ridiculous speed but I always catch myself 5-10mph above the limit if I'm not paying attention. So in that sense I kind of need to practice knowing what my bike sounds like at certain speeds in certain gears if I want to ride properly Laughing a quick glance every now and then when I'm getting up to speed is usually all I do and I prefer to have a big number there instead of reading a needle. Or when some fucker is going really slow and I glance down and shake my head in amazement at how they're going 17mph in a 30.

Other times like, as you said, checking my speed when coming up to cameras.

Hi

Analogue both for me. Doubt a digital one is any more accurate (might give an absolute representation of a rough idea of the speed), and analogue is easier to glance at.

All the best

Never had digital, so I can't really say.
Quite happy with analogue, but I'm sure I could adapt.

Tell you what I do like on instrumentation; a nice warm-coloured back-lighting. Actually, I think it's more to do with the colour of the markings on analogue clock faces; orange and red = Smile Blue or green = Sad The difference it puts into my mood on, say, a cold, wet motorway at night is invaluable. Silly perhaps, but there you go... Smile

I find it's easier to tell how close you are to the camera's trigger speed with a digital display if the speedo goes up to a high number.

If the top speed of the bike isn't very high (so the numbers on the dial are distinct), then I don't care one way or the other.

Prefer analogue tach.

For touring, the ability to switch from mph to kph is quite handy; usually the secondary kph display for analogue speedos is much harder to read than the primary mph - it's often in red, and I can't see red very well. But touring is usually done with GPS, and I normally rely on its speed readout instead, as it's more accurate.

I'd never had digital and so when looking for clocks for my pan euro I was looking for analogue but ended up going for digital speedo with analogue tach, I quite like it.
I set it up myself to slightly over read, just for the sake of cameras and the like so is about 3% out by preference, whether at 30 or 100 mph.

Got a link for that Marm? How do they deal with the varying types of fuel level sender, can you build/select a profile or do they have pre-programmed popular models?

There are 2 options, this one or don't bother. It is, after looking through a lot, the cheapest uk based option that mentions mph and kph, you could buy cheaper by looking for the 'streetfighter' logo on the tacho.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261533658813?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The only thing on mine that doesn't work is the fuel gauge, i've not looked into it.
Ijust make sure i fill by 200 miles, except today at 240 as i've been towing the trailer and taking it easy.

This link below is for some instructions that it doesn't come with.
You also need to know that if you hold down both buttons and then turn on ignition, it changes from kph to mph.
If you want to set the mileage to that of your old clocks, you need to input it in km's.

Current Gen of ER6f has digital speedo, analogue tacho. (Which is my fave)
One before that had both digital and the one before that had both analogue.

Voted analogue because it's satisfying watching that needle go around... I remember when the ZZR1400 first came out and seeing a video of the speedo going from nought to shityourpants so fast it was hilarious Razz

I prefer both digital so far overall - both digital for me on the ZX currently. I found my previous bikes analogues were more difficult to read at night clearly in particular; might of just been crappy dash-lighting though Laughing

The stuff about 'seeing' in the corner of your eye with analogues without actually looking being a benefit does make a lot of sense, but i've never really needed to or noticed it myself so far.

Probably mostly down to what you get used to I guess Razz
