The advantages are obvious, and yes the price I saw at donington last week was worth it at £59 per set.

But then saw the DIY at home custom moulding jobs on ebay for £6.99 for two.

Anyone tried these?

I had some of the ebay specials DIY jobs they are OK
A bit too good really so I went back to the foam ones

Hi

I have some custom ear plugs and I have also used foam ones.

The foam ones (for me) reduce noise levels more. However I seem to have a fairly small inner ear and I really struggle to get the foam ones to stay rolled up small enough for long enough to get them into place, and even when I do just about manage it they come out within half an hour or so of riding most of the time.

The moulded ones are noisier, but far easier to get in place and once in place they stay there. Possibly less comfortable depending on how my ears land up sitting against the lining of my lid.

I can see the benefits of moulded ones. I currently use the foam ones, and much like Kickstart my ear canals are quite small and it takes me several attempts to get them to stay in far enough. I can see it would be far easier to have moulded ones that go in correctly the first time, and stay in.

For the sake of £7, they're probably worth a go. Let us know how you get on.

As an aside, I won a bag of foam ear plugs in a raffle a few years ago. Stuck them in the car and forgot about them for a year or 2. Then couldn't find the moulded ones one day so grabbed a set of these. They worked brilliantly, taking ages to expand. So I ordered a large box of them and was gutted when they weren't much use to me. Think that the time the others had spent getting baked in the sun on the car parcel shelf had affected them, but an 18 month lead time for a new set of ear plugs is a bit much

they take considerably longer to expand when cold; put a pair in the fridge and try it?

I read 'car' as 'ear'. Shocked

I use the foam ones but they're more like memory foam than sponge. Even though they expand more slowly and are slightly firmer I still have to cut them in half lengthways to get them to stay in. At full girth they're often wriggling out of my ear within 5 minutes of setting off.

Might give that a try. Noticeable that once the foam ones are a touch warm (such as from having tried to put them in a couple of times) they expand far more quickly.

If you do the self moulded ones make sure you don't leave too much sticking out - make sure the level is below your tragus. I didn't get it right and every time I put my helmet on it caught one of them dislodging it slightly.. Ended up being a PITA so went back to foam ones.

Also tried those tree ones, had a bit on a panic when I couldn't get one out, wont try them again.

Hmm never really been bothered by wind noise but maybe because I've gone deaf.
The tone of my old 125 used to be a bit annoying tbh.Could have used some ear plugs for that.

I had a go at the self mould ones. Were shite. Didn't drown enough noise out for my liking. Went back to Ultrafit 20s. £1 a pair and they last 6 months.

Whats speeds are we taking here? Is it for track use or something?
I've never really had a problem with wind noise Smile Not at legal speeds anyway.
Often parp down the dual carriageway early mornings at a ton and even then I cant say its ever bothered me.
But I suppose if you go faster it could get a bit rough.I think its the cold that slows me down rather than the noise.

Have you ever tried riding with ear plugs? Once you've done it you'll never go back.

It doesn't 'bother' you - it's not noise that you necessarily hear; it's not like a barking dog or a crying baby. But it is damaging your hearing, and if you do it for long enough without ear protection, you'll stand a significant chance of, umm, significant hearing loss. It's not nice.

You also have a much higher chance of getting tinnitus, which is bloody annoying I can tell you.

EAR ultrafit / tracer

SNR 32 from those, more than enough.

Just leave them dangling round my neck when I stop for fuel etc too.

I cut down the rubber bit sticking out by about half, before reinserting the cord with a dab of superglue on it, otherwise the ends brush on the inside of your lid.

Hmm slightly worried that I don't wear plugs now and everyone else seems to.
I always thought they were for if you had a loud pipe.
I honestly never knew this was a problem.
On my 125 the droning tone did get to my ears a bit but on the 750 the tone is pretty nice and the faster speed never seemed to affect me.

It's insidious. And the worse your hearing gets, the less you'll notice it.

To be honest, my commute is on the borderline of possibly not needing plugs (25 minutes, two short fast stretches), but I don't want to find out in another 10 years that I'd guessed wrong. Hearing doesn't grow back.

Thing is, deafness is quite rock and roll, so there's that at least.
