To ride with no rear brake, quite obviously so, with the caliper cable tied to the pillion footrest hanger.

It would be 15 miles a day for a couple of days.

And what is the punishment if caught?

When pulled over with leaking fork seals a while ago, the police said they could declare the bike unsafe (forgot the technical term), so I'd have to get it towed and re-MOT'd. Can't remember if they said anything about a fine/points.

I rode for 2 months without a rear brake, but being drum it wasn't obvious it was worn out.

Before pitch forks come out, I did it once when I fitted pads which seemed to be made out of biscuits. They just disintegrated, cost two new discs due to uber scoring and 8 new pistons.

I've ridden without a rear brake pedal before and not died. Pre-empt a lot more and use the front progressively.

Whether it's illegal or not, if you leave one thing that needs doing, put it off for another day, what other things might you start leaving that might make your vehicle less safe? I'm not saying you would, but it's a slippery slope for some people. I work in the motor trade, I see this happening a fair bit, cars scraping by their MOTs with dozens of advisories that the customer declines to fix unless it fails the MOT.

I'm not sure there are varying degrees of illegality. It either is or isn't.

I would do it myself but keep a bigger distance in front, look around more and generally be a bit more sensible, because although I rarely use the back brake, there are times I feel I have to.

I passed MOD 2 (A1) with a none functioning front brake which was in Horseforth. I also rode to a job in Sheffield with no front brake whilst waiting for the new calliper to arrive.

Riding without a rear would be a doddle.

My bike is only a 125 though so engine braking is massive.
