To ride with no rear brake, quite obviously so, with the caliper cable tied to the pillion footrest hanger.

It would be 15 miles a day for a couple of days.

And what is the punishment if caught?

CU10 3 points and £2500 penalty (max).

Before pitch forks come out, I did it once when I fitted pads which seemed to be made out of biscuits. They just disintegrated, cost two new discs due to uber scoring and 8 new pistons.

^ This, and need to take it to a mates to get the seized piston out.

Was supposed to be just changing the pads and realised, so I've ordered new seals & such.

If I could get the piston out, I'd just put the caliper back on and no-one would be any the wiser for a few days.

I'm not particularly concerned about the lack of a rear brake from the safety, rear brake only get used when I'm being a knob and I'm sure I can refrain for a few days.

Better post in the workshop.

I've ridden without a rear brake pedal before and not died. Pre-empt a lot more and use the front progressively.

Whether it's illegal or not, if you leave one thing that needs doing, put it off for another day, what other things might you start leaving that might make your vehicle less safe? I'm not saying you would, but it's a slippery slope for some people. I work in the motor trade, I see this happening a fair bit, cars scraping by their MOTs with dozens of advisories that the customer declines to fix unless it fails the MOT.

I'm not sure there are varying degrees of illegality. It either is or isn't.

I would do it myself but keep a bigger distance in front, look around more and generally be a bit more sensible, because although I rarely use the back brake, there are times I feel I have to.

It's not too bad if you have twin discs. Had to do this in the middle of nowhere on my mate's bike after he had a big off. The disc was warped so much it was eating into the caliper. Wedged a piece of wood between the pads and zip tied/taped it to the fork. No one liked him riding behind too closely.

Prohibition Notice is the technical term you mean.

The front exhaust downpipe was flattened and stopping the clutch being used, that took bolt loosening and tyre levers to sort out. The smashed bash plate was worked back into shape using rocks at the crash site. The disintegrated indestructable pannier was bashed with rocks back into shape and the top and bottom held on with ratchet straps. No AA/RAC there.

It's also 100% illegal to do 71mph on a motorway and 100% illegal to brutally murder an entire preschool.

However, when asked 'how illegal' each were, it's reasonable to assume that most wouldn't be looking for them to be explained as equal Wink.

I think you're overstating the need for a rear just a tad.

Try a big single, coming off the throttle is like hitting the brakes, going down a gear in a straight line in the dry gets the rear sliding out.

Or a big four with 150hp, despite that the top gear of the single is probably lower than the bottom gear of the litre bike.

I presumed he was just playing the idiotic caricature with that statement.

Anyway, yes - I've ridden without brakes a few times after racing, apart from the time I foolishly restarted the engine at the wrong time (having the idle at 1/3rd revs while downgeared gave it a bit of life in that situation), it's been fine.
If you've got a decent front brake, you shouldn't need to use the rear at all.

The main reason to use the rear brake, as I understand it, is to modulate the speed of the rear wheel to keep it spinning a chunk lower than the road speed when you've initiated a slide with the engine - so just avoid doing this, and it should fine Thumbs Up.
