Hey guys,

Had and accident on the kwak, I'm fine and only suffered a few bruises and shaken up a bit!
The bike hasn't faired so well and going by the prices of need parts I think it will comfortably be a write off even though I don't think there is any major structural damage.

Since I really like my bike and think it would be a nice winter project I would be happy to buy the bike back from the insurer should it be written off.

Having spoken to a couple of mates about it they say not to let the bike be taken away becacuse it can be hard to get back or will have to pay charges or the insurer might offer it to someone else and tell me I can't buy it back (they have said it's possible already though) ??

When I asked the insurer to send the assessor to my home the girl said that was fine but then went on to ask if I thought the bike may be written off to which I said yes possibly. She said it would have to be picked up and taken to there inspection facility because to write off a bike they have to assess it in a garage (take bits off ect) to know what catagory and if it's A or B they can't sell it back to me ??

Any advice? The bike is still in my garage and they haven't phoned to arrange pick up yet.

Obviously my main priority is to get the best payout for the bike but it would seem a shame not to be able to do a deal to keep the bike just because of a school boy error.

Thumbs Up

Paint diagram is so 20th century. Try accidentsketch.co.uk (as recommended by Rogerborg).

I'd chase them up about an assessor. You are not an expert in checking a vehicle is roadworthy or likely to be cost-effective repairable (I'm presuming). So, with hindsight, if asked if write-off honest answer is "I don't know". Get them to send assessor to your home and let this 'expert'* decide.

Also saying not sell cat a or b back to you is their internal policy. There's actually nothing legal preventing them doing that. Only if they do say cat a or cat b make damn sure you get them to complete the scrapped section of the V5 (your responsibility). Don't just hand over v5 and expect it to happen. If you do expect fines demands for money from DVLA once tax/insurance expires.

With insurance, if they do take bike check insurance cancelled (or someone may put back on road and crash leaving you with the bill, as recent thread).

Hope you get sorted ok Thumbs Up

* I say 'expert' because contacted insurance about a leaking roof. The firm they sub-contracted assessment to eventually sent a 'surveyor'. Who actually had no more surveying qualifications than me (which is none).

Ok but how can they make the decision of catagory if they don't get the fairings off ect to check for damage to the frame ect. They can only look at what they can see on face value in my garage.

I'd prefer it not to go...Anyone with personal experience?

Experience and magic.

They have an idea of costs for fairings, original fitted by main dealer. They're expensive. So a bike can be written off just on that (eg cat d). So any other broken metal bits just starts to ratchet that up. Even saying that a suspected bent frame (wheels out of true) could be a cat c. Or the forks just twisted in the yolks as in Bodyguard's Varadero Wink

Sorted, they are sending out and independent engineer apparently as they don't have their own!
Took a bit of getting across why I wanted it assessed at home here but actually the fella on the other end was very nice...makes a change.

I'll post up details of the accident once the insurance claim is sorted as 1. I don't want to jeopardise the claim ( I know I worry to much..wuss) 2. I feel a bit of a dick and
3. I don't want certain people who may be on here to see me talking about it right now.

Thanks again guys.

Ignore the cat a, b, c, d stuff.

Likely cat c as long as frame is groovy. If not, you can still keep cat B.
