Over the weekend I did something very silly.

Me and my friend often go away and do silly things on mountains. I decided to take my bike for the first time and packed everything I could need into a large rucksack. We camped in one of the national parks and did some rock climbing, hiking, downhill riding, kayaking, cliff diving etc etc etc.

It's important to mention we met at the campsite - he's from up north, I'm a southerner. Also, we are all fairly experienced in these activities and are certainly not out to kill ourselves.

Now, during one of these activities I may have broken and dislocated my shoulder a little bit... mountain rescue were involved as were other things with flashy lights etc etc etc.

I've now managed to get home but my bike has not. It's locked up in a car park and the proprietors have my details.

My RAC covers me for injury but only for 10 miles delivery and I had to get a&e to fax them confidential info about my accident which they didn't like at all. This was great to get it to a car park BUT they quoted me £500 too deliver it home. That's more than I paid for my bike.

So I am now typing with one hand. Bored and bikeless.

How the **** do I get my bike back. Doctors are saying 6mnths before I will ride again and I dont know anyone else who can ride.

Bike weighs 230kg - too heavy to chuck in the boot.

I suppose someone will have to come to you to get the keys before getting it.

Where is the bike and where are you?

He's in South Wales, according to his profile.

If it was North Wales, I would have considered it, it's a lovely day for a ride too.

Nice idea but I cant drive with arm strapped up (or at least hire centre might not be so keen on it) and even if I could get the van there I need to get a 750 on the back...

I'm in South Wales. Bike is in North Wales. Friend is in Scotland.

4 hours drive minimum so 8hr round trip.

If you can't get anyone to ride it back for you, why not contact one of your local bike shops that sells bikes online and uses a delivery service to deliver their bikes around the country. Ask the dealer who they use to courier their bikes and give them a call.

Don't know how much it'll cost you though but, I think the dealers usually charge around a ton for this service.

As Rogerborg says, please provide full details of where the bike is parked and who is looking after it so any man with a van reading this open forum can got and collected it pretending to be genuine good Samaritan and get a free bike. Yes, do that, because you know it makes sense.

FWIW when I came off mine it was parked just off the road on track to pumping works for power station. That was monitored by security cameras. When went to collect (got someone else to ride) workers said there'd been a number of vans pull up and look the bike over. We'd made sure it had plenty of locks (but no ground anchor/fixed point available). I'm guessing that because it was a lardy tourer rather than a lightweight sports machine their enthusiasm for trying to lift it into said vans diminished.

Is there noone local to you on BCF who can get a train up and ride it back?

My neighbour is 70 something and had a paragliding accident last month, dislocating his shoulder. He was straight on his bike a week later, since it would be unsafe to paraglide Laughing and next month he is off to himalayars for some proper paragliding, of mountains and stuff.

So man up and ride it back Thumbs Up

You have no idea how tempting this is!!! But I know from experience that it's not worth trying to rush recovery - I still have plenty of years left to kick myself for rushing it.

Haha, yeah the postcode is FU26 O77
You will need the following equipment: hacksaw, power drill, generator, ninja costume...
I recommend a Manual Handling Risk Assessment is carried out prior to theft. Should this not be submitted I cannot be held liable for any personal injury claims.

I'm thinking hire a van with a towbar and a bike trailer and getting two friends to join me (i wont be much help in getting it onto the trailer).

Will have to give them a bike each from my collection or something...

1. What do you ride?
2. Have you ever single handedly loaded it into the rear of a transit?

Get 2 mates perhaps? IIRC front of a transit seats 3.

BTW CaNsA forgot to add ratchet straps.

He probably just manned up and held it whilst his mate drove.

Bikes I have single handedly loaded in to the back of a transit van:-

zxr400
steel frame cbr600f
blandit 6
vfr800

Times I have been a drama queen about loading a bike into the back of a transit van:-
Error 404 "Not Found"

Sat on a bike, in the back of a van, the whole way back from Chester to stop it from falling over.

Problem?

Surely you can find two mates to wheel it up the plank for you or one who has the skill to ride it up the plank? It really isn't hard.

I have single handedly loaded my Royal Enfield into the back of a van,

Admitedly it was a Mercedes Vito, and not a transit, but I'm not sure if different types of van need signifncatly different techniques

I have many times loaded bikes of all sizes in to all sizes of vans on my own - from a Vito to big LWB/high top vans.
Vito can actually be harded with the limited head room.

The unscrupulous might consider getting recovery which covers you in case of injury, or even something like a 'lost key' and engineering a position where the bike would have to be recovered while explaining they have to get back ASAP and so have got a lift back.
