Hi

Just curious to know whether people have worked their way up through the cc sizes, i.e. 125cc to 400cc to 600cc, or did you jump stright onto a 600cc or bigger from a 125cc? And if you did jump straight from a learner legal to a big sports bike, what was it like and did you have any scares Shocked ...

I would like to think that working up gradually to a bigger bike is probably the right way to do it, but I'm sure there are a few crazy people Twisted Evil on here that have gone from one extreme to the other!

my first bike was a 1990 ZZR 250 then sold it after 8 months to buy a 2004 ZX-6R. I had to break it in for a while which was a good chance for me to get confidence in it's brakes, suspension, handling characteristics and low speed manouvres after that it was like when I open the throttle I ask for it every time! Just always remeber that I control the bike and not to be intimidated by it Shocked

Hi

Main bikes

100cc 2t 11hp = H100S
100cc 4t 11hp = CB100N
125cc 2t 18hp = Played with MBX125
400cc 4t 30hp = CB400N
125cc 2t 22hp = Early Aprilia AF1
750cc 4t 85hp = FZ750
125cc 2t 26hp = Aprilia AF1 Futura
125cc 2t 28hp = Aprilia RS125
750cc 4t 85hp = GPX750
1200cc 4t 100hp = 1200 Bandit
1000cc 4t 145hp (claimed......) = Bimota YB10
600cc 4t 55hp = 600 Diversion
600cc 4t 75hp = FZR600

Had quite a few other bikes as well, but only for occasional toy use. Oh, and plenty of those bikes overlapped for quite a while. And the Bandit is no longer 100hp.

All the best

Keith

My first bike was a Suzuki GS125 which I had for nearly 7 months.
My second bike is a Kawasaki ZR750 Zephyr.

I went into a local bike dealers to book my 125 in for an MOT before I sold it and they said they would take it in part ex without an MOT for about £100 less than I was going to put it in the paper for. After totting up the cash it would need for an MOT, parts, & paper ad fees I said 'OK, what you got?'
The salesman then pointed me in the direction of a 900cc Triumph!
I reminded him that I had only passed my test the week before.

I saw the Zephyr and fell in love with it, put down a deposit and went home to tell my b/f.
He asked me what I'd got and I just said a Zephyr. 'Good starter bike' he said.
He went down to test ride it and said 'What the hell is this?'
He'd been expecting me to get the 550 version.
I said to him that HE had told me to get a Zephyr the previous Sept as we'd seen one at RR Brighton.
'Yeah, 550, NOT 750!'
Well, I didn't know, I just saw the Zephyr badge!
Anyway I got it, and b/f had to sell his 600 Bandit to get a GSX1400 'cos he got so pissed of at me vanishing into the distance.

Now I want the 1100 Zephyr.

I reckon you should get the biggest bike you can
1) afford (insurance might be a factor)
2) handle

I'm so glad I didn't get a 500 or 550 bike 'cos I think I'd be fairly frustrated with it by now.
You will only wish you had got that slightly bigger bike after a while.

After a 125 4st and then 125 2st I went to a KLR650 (about 40hp or so) then onto a 100hp 600.

I think the power is much more important than the cc... you could go to 45hp 800cc, or a 70hp tuned 250cc Smile.

G agree with you,
plenty of 400ccs whizz past me!
I should have made myself a bit more clear! Confused

Go for the biggest bhp you are comfy with!

It's just that the 550 Zeph is slower than the 750! Smile

Derbi GPR50 -> Sachs xtc 125 4st -> Suzuki SV650S K2

Ridden loads of other stuff as well and in between bikes, rode a zxr400 ( i dont fit on it seriously, with leathers on i have to pull my legs up on to the pegs with my hands Confused ) And a cb500, before making the decision to go for SV after the 125.
