I think I already know the answer to this(shouldn't be an issue), but I call out to the Bcf techies.

Backstory.

Gsxr 750 k4, the bike has been off the road for a while (too long, new baby, no money etc).

I'm going to book it in for an mot tomorrow, gone through the Mot testers handbook. Everything works as it should, the bike should pass.

Problem being, turn ignition on, fuel pump doesn't prime, gives a c28 code, secondary throttle valve actuator(basically butterfly's gummed up with old fuel and lack of use) , cycle the kill switch a few times it does and starts normally.

Is the tester going to be an Arse about this if I prewarn him?

Or will an Fi code start the alarm bells ringing?

Itching to get back on the horse so to speak, is bureaucracy going to get in the way?

Tldr: Is an Fi light a MOT fail?

Cheers

Benji

Are you saying there is a kill switch 'trick' to getting the bike to start up?

It's very odd, turn the key the clocks come on, you get a quick (milliseconds) buzz from the fuel pump, the rev counter doesn't do its normal sweep, it just sits there with the Fi light flashing and the start button does squat.

If you flick the kill switch on-off three or four times in quick succession eventually the bike will go through its usual routine, with a long fuel pump prime a full rev counter sweep and will then start as normal but with the Fi light flashing away.

Will try and grab a video.

It does require it to start if the bike needs to have the engine running to test the lights, ala certain 2strokers.

Don't know about your MOT guy but mine would be fine with either having the kill switch faff explained (and maybe stick a post-it note on the clocks) or for me to hang around and start it myself.

I'm sure he has been left with bikes harder to start than yours due to dodgy immobilisers/alarms.

How do they test the zorst for leaks and noise if the bike does not have to run?

Serious question as my bike gets the 'exhaust noise excessive' seal of approval most years.

It does require it to start if the bike needs to have the engine running to test the lights, ala certain 2strokers.

The MOT tester can also take bike for a ride if there's any query over the straightness off the frame/wheel alignment/handling. So I guess starting would be good for that.

...but in general no, doesn't need to start. Just need to turn electrics on for stuff like indicator idiot/repeater light on dash (if you can't see indicators from seat).

It isn't a fail, however why don't you just lift the tank, remove airbox, pull the connectors apart and give them a decent clean along with the RH switch gear.

My 750Y had the C28 issue, was a dodgy green fuzzy mess on a connector block. Thumbs Up

I've had all that apart and cleaned it all, all manner of carb cleaner and contact cleaner has been splashed about under there.

The upper butterflies are a little stiff due to being sat for a while guessing old gummy fuel, they've freed off a lot, it just needs riding again and some use to free everything back up fully.

It's this issue that's throwing up the code at a guess as when you turn the ignition on. The butterflies go through their full range of motion to check sensors as you turn the key. I think the slight stiffness is confusing the ecu into thinking the sensor is guffed.

Lots of helpful replies so far Thumbs Up
