Still browsing for a bike. Will probably go hunting round dealers etc tomorrow to get a feel.

As per my other thread, I had a B12 as my most recent bike. Loved it. Looking for something for a simple commute ('A' roads, filtering) and of course fun.

As a lot of the stuff I do requires a car, I'm thinking now I needn't go for a bike as powerful as before, so being a bit open minded. So the 600cc category is opening up.

The thing is, I'm just not finding anything cheap in this area. My post-code is GU10 so feel free to do a few searches and see what you mean. As an example, looked into Kwak ZZR600s as a thread here recommended them as a cheap possible fun bike - none around, and the ones that are are £3k plus.

SV650s? None around. What has happened to them all?!

My only real requirement is a fairing. Not just for motorways, I just prefer that look.

I still keep getting drawn to the Sprint / Speed Triples though. Sigh.

Seems to be a few Fazer 600's not too far from you. Like so: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Fazer-600-FZS-Black-/161417858424?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2595410d78

I think I'm a bit nervous about buying privately.

Most local dealers won't have anything cheap as chips. This is the only dealer I found with a selection of stuff low down:

https://www.msgmotorcycles.co.uk/123221/msgmotorcycles_stock.htm

Including a Fazer 600. About £2.5k though.

Confession here is that of my previous bigger bikes (B6, B12) I bought both from new. So in terms of buying 2nd hand, this would be a bit new to me.

There are plenty of Thundercats out there... £2k should get you a good one.

I'm working on it chief Smile

My SV is now requiring a lot more choke to get it started in the morning. It's spitting and popping a lot on even a modest overrun too.
Am a bit tempted to have a crack at valve clearance + then carb balance. But then again, while it keeps running, feck it, I'll only make it worse.

Mewcenary I spent months staring at ebay GU1 + 20 miles and there really wasn't much between October and April to be honest. Everything seemed overpriced to me at least.
Eventually in April an SV650 popped up that was cheap(ish).
It's been reliable, after replacing the reg/rec which was clearly fecked when I bought the bike.

If I could have gotten a FZ6 I would of. And there have been a few.
Would've liked an ER6, but too pricey still.

In short, if you don't want to venture beyond GU30, you may find you'll have a long wait to get what you want.

Then you'll get gouged at a dealer for the exact same bikes. That's how it works.

eBay and Gumtree (and Bike Trader as a backup), cash in hand, ride bike, like bike, buy bike. If it needs anything done, it's unlikely to cost more than the £500 minimum dealer premium.

I'd scrub the ZZR600 off your list if you're going from a bandit 12 and looking for something fun. Either go for the 6R or something else. Thumbs Up

Thundercats are meant to be decent too as has already been mentioned, but i've not ridden one.

Although you have to put up with a lot of idiots and illiterate people Facebook is great for buying cheap vehicles

Search for groups called "bikes for sale (county)" and variations like that you will find loads

I've bought my last bikes privately and saved a lot of money doing so Vs dealers. Theres always potential for a bad one of course, but then there is with a dealer too. Plus warranties are rarely worth the paper they're written after considering exceptions and get-out-clauses.

Things like service history are a plus in some respects buying privately - but then a stamps a stamp at the end of the day, its not really proof its been maintained and not abused on a daily basis. Someone may of never paid someone to service a bike and give it a stamp at all, but may of meticulously home-serviced it into high mileage.

Taking the time to look it over, speak to the owner and ideally take it for a test ride should give you a fairly good idea if its going to be imminently knackered or not.

To back up what is said above I would rather buy privately from someone wiling to talk about that bike from personal experiences etc you can tell a lot from the person selling, if they seem a genuine nice person and day about the history clearly you can feel a bit safe

Rather than a dealer saying nothing bad and having no experience but just wanting to sell it

If that makes sense, sorry if not, bit late on a Friday Wink

Agreed I once bought a used dirt bike from them, they were decidedly "MEH out of 10"

My Enfield came from a retired chap with a meticulous mancave, a spreadsheet listing everything he'd done to it, down to the API grade of oils used, and a 15 minute show-and-tell exposition on what he'd changed, upgraded or fettled.

I'd far, far rather trust that than a bit of ink in a book.

It's actually occurred to me that you can buy custom ink stamps from eBay for a few £££. I was probably a mug for paying the local spanner monkey to change the oil and filters on the GS, I should just have done it myself and stamped "R Borg & Collective" in the book. Whistle

Hi

As an aside on stamps in a book, a while ago we had a Renault car. Renault would not take stamps in the service book as proof of servicing for warranty claims. Needed the receipts for the services to go with it.

All the best

Hey Stoney!

Thanks for the reply. It may be that I'm not after a '6' after all. Just about to post a thread about it!

I doubt you can buy low mileage good and cheap bike from a dealer. At least I have not seen such not in our area or in any area in the UK.

Private is more likely.

There is a new shop in Wokingham Wessex bike works, they sell cheap as chips, but high mileage bikes you need to go there to see the bikes. Normandy motorcycles are small shop near you.

Surrey Motorcycle Salvage has excellent Cat C and D bikes, you can call them, go there and check the bikes before you bid.

https://stores.ebay.co.uk/Surrey-Motorcycle-Salvage

Finally there is viewing by appointment only shop called Used bikes trading near MSG motorcycles. Never have used them and I am kind of suspicious about all this viewing by appointment only shops.

https://www.usedbiketradingltd.co.uk/

MTC motorcycles in Reading sometimes have nice second hand bikes. Not now though.

https://www.mtcmotorcycles.co.uk/page_34.php?pgenme=motorcycle-sales

All the others in the area I know are the usual franchised dealers like Yamaha Infinity, Farnham and Hatfields Honda and the prices there are completely off the charts Laughing

There's some good deals on CB-1s around it seems.

Was almost tempted to get myself one too, until I rode it, anyway Razz.
