Hi all,

I'm relatively new to the world of biking (Have wanted one since I was little, Hubby passed his test quite a few years ago and I'm about to take my MOD2) but have been riding about since June this year on a 125cc. As above I'm taking my MOD 2 on Wednesday and am rather nervous!

I'm hoping for the best but think a re-take might be on the cards due to nerves/forgetting something + the free ride worries me quite a bit as I'm hopeless with directions at the best of time!

But anyway, hopefully everything will go okay and I'll be joining the world of big bikers soon! Smile

Hey, you've done the hard part - now it's just a nice ride out. Really don't sweat the free ride. It doesn't matter where you go, as long as you go there confidently and safely.

Got a bike in mind for when you've got your Big Girl License?

I'm trying not too, I think I just started worrying after being corrected several times on my last lesson (In fairness I was still a bit shaky from passing the MOD1 - was a moment of I passed?!?! and I'd been riding for three days straight, 8 hour days and was tired and sore).

I've been learning on a Gladius which is fantastic but unfortunately out of my price range, but have been looking at the CBR600 (Jelly Mould, this is the one I've always wanted but think it might be a bit much for a first bike), The GSX and a few others, but don't really have anything specific in mind (I'm on a bit of a tight budget of under £1k so I think that's limiting my choices)

You could get an SV650S or Bandit for £1K... which is very different from saying that you should. Whistle

CBR600, why not? Even if you don't ride it to its potential, you'll have a blast. Buy now, sell in spring, lose nothing (or even make a bit).

Very true! There's not a really a why not, I think it's more a case of which riding style suits me more and what I can find in my budget Smile

I'm sure your nerves will be fine 10 yards after you start off.

My mind set was I know what I can do but I can't foresee or influence what others do on the road.

And what do you know. My first roundabout had three lanes I'm in the left one, a silver vauxhall cut across from the far right through the three lanes. I stopped for him, actually for my own safety and thought f*•*, b*•*•*•*, w*•*•* I've failed because I've caused a car behind to stop. With the space made another car decided to move from the centre lane across into my lane. FFS I thought. Low and behold when we get back to the test centre I'm congratulated on how I handled myself the situation and for passing.

Another instructor may have failed me. Not for my riding but for outside influences, so just chill and enjoy but be prepaired to resit if needed.

Good luck!

Thank you! I think I'm taking the test in Oxford which I'm not too familiar with but I do know of at least two interesting roundabouts! Hopefully everyone else will have decided to stay home! Smile

I've never spent over £1k on a bike and normally under half that. Never, not once have I thought "my choice is limited". Seriously scour eBay and gumtree there is a lot of choice for your budget.

If you think the 600 is too much to start I know of a CBR400 Aero being sold in Wiltshire well within your budget.

I was quite poor on my brush up lesson a week before the test but I found the actual test easy ,except for going the wrong way off a roundabout.
It was good in a way that I did so many minor things wrong on the lesson because they stuck in my head and stopped me from doing them during the test.
Free ride if I remember was just something like make your way towards the M1 and there were loads of signs to point me there.

You can check in ebay completed listing to get an idea what are the selling prices for particular bike model, for example I see plenty of Honda CB600 Hornets going under £1000:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Honda-/9806/i.html?_from=R40&_sop=15&LH_Complete=1&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo&_udhi=1%2C000&_nkw=cb600&_dcat=9806&rt=nc&_pppn=r1

I did my tests on my own bike,

I'd never skidded it or locked the back wheel prior to doing my training.

In practice for the emergency stop I pulled a 6ft skid, turned the bike off, put the stand down and got off to be greeted by the instructor "cup of tea then?"

no problems on test.

I locked the back wheel 3 times on the morning of my second test, once was stopping for a traffic light that went orange as I reached it (on driving test would have been advised to go through as stopping distance too short) was told don't worry about it, carry on, it's up to the examiner to keep up, not up to you to stop for him.

on the free ride it's about you choosing and using lanes / junctions correctly, they'll tell you to follow signs for the A630 or follow signs for Somewhereville, what they want to see is that you can plan your movements, not relying on '3rd exit on the roundabout' step by step instructions.

if you take the wrong exit they'll give you a new road number or place name to follow for.

Don't worry, just relax, keep an eye out for bus stops when you're told to find a safe place to pull in (a favourite at the test centre I used) He just wanted a chat as we'd not had any traffic and were too far along the route for our time and at risk of catching another test up.

I've got my eye on something on ebay at the moment Smile

Thanks for the stories, they are making me feel a bit more relaxed about the whole thing. I guess what ever will be will be, and its not the end of the world if I have to take it again Smile

All the best riders fail the first one anyway. Whistle

I was doing fine until DSA Derek took me though a series of unmarked crossroads, a personal obsession of his as it turned out. I spotted and slowed for the first, same for the 2nd, looked in my mirrors and saw his Pan Euro right up my tailpipe, wasted a second wondering what he was playing it, didn't brake for the 3rd set of crossroads, fail.

So, eyes ahead, ignore whatever the examiner is up to. If he runs into the back of you, you get a Pity Pass probably.

What a lovely chap! Not sure who I've got, but I'm hoping the guy from the Mod 1 - I've been forewarn about a couple of sneaky roads in Oxford already.

Hi....

The tips for Oxford be ever mindful of the 20's and 30's speed limits, if you've got time prior "reckie" the Rose Hill, Cowley Temple Cowley areas. Time spend here will give you extra confidence under test conditions.
Watch out for the "one-way" triangle (courtlands road) just along for Rose Hill shops.
I was told the route takes you intentionally to take a right turn back onto the main road to make sure you position keeping to the right on approach, stopping and waiting to emerge. DO NOT leave any sizeable gap to the right. I was told its been known for examiners to ride into any space if you leave it big enough just to demonstrate the point in readiness for the negative lecture debrief.......
Above all, hold your nerve, once it starts you won't be half as nervous and come back and tell us how many minors (if any) you got... [/list]

Thanks for the advice! I think I've been up those on the training sessions, though I don't remember the one way part... Will have to ask trainers tomorrow morning (My test isn't till 1:15 and I'm on a session from 7:45am till then!)

I'm hoping that's true, it did seem to be for the MOD1 - I was bricking that too (probably something to do with finding the U-turn impossible during practice) but settled down after it started. I'd just like it over and done with now!!

For some people (me included) nerves are almost paralysing when it comes to bike/car tests. Remember to breathe! And don't worry about getting it wrong. I got lost 4 times on my free ride Smile
Just remember to be safe. If your in the wrong lane, stick to it, if your taking the wrong exit on a roundabout, take it, don't swerve at the last minute or change indication.
As they say, do the wrong thing right, not the right thing wrong.

Go for it! Honda's and specifically CBR's are renowned for being well mannered. Yes they will go fast if you make them, but they are easy to ride sensibly.
Surely get the bike you want, the one that gives you butterflies when opening the garage door. Best reward for all the expense, anguish and hoop jumping Smile

Always good idea to go and try bikes if/when you can. You may find something unexpectedly tugging at your heart strings.

Good luck!

I don't remember being this worried about my car test! (Mind you I've probably blocked this from my memory!) I think it's because I hate not doing things right first time. A lady I was on training with last week just text me saying she's failed the MOD1 - I'm honestly shocked as she just jumped straight on the big bike and was a natural.

I have to say its the CBR that does it for me. If thinks go the way I hope there may be one coming to live with me shortly! (Just noticed you have a Street Triple too Smile Hubby has one and loves it!)

That's the thing with the MOD1, it's easy to pass, it's easy to fail.
Clip a cone with a boot, forget to look around when pushing the bike in a locked cage Rolling Eyes , don't get enough speed on the swerve test, or a foot down on the u-turn Rolling Eyes .
I don't mean to put you off, it is what it is and you will pass!

It wasn't part of the plan, just test rode a couple of bikes and was completely hooked by the ST. 0% Finance helped. A hilarious, scampering, enthusiastic little terrier/spaniel of a bike. Absolutely love it!

Aye, I've rather decided what will be will be, if I pass, fantastic, if I don't then I'm not ready to be let loose yet.

Don't blame you - had a sit on the street and it's a lovely bike - though a little long in the front for my liking. This is his 4th bike and I think he likes this one the most Smile
