Basically i cant see anything at night unless i use full beam, i just replaced the main bulb because it didnt turn on unless i switched to full beam and it still doesnt.

The guy in halfords said thats how its meant to be and on small bikes you are meant to use the high beam.

When i turn the bike on the small bulb at the bottom turns on and thats it. The main bulb is always off unless i use full beam and im not sure thats right? If the main bulb does only turn on when full beam is on how am i meant to see anything?

The bulb in my bike now is https://www.halfords.com/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycle-parts/halfords-bike-it-motorcycle-bulb-hmb3603-12v-25-25w

My headlight unit is similar to this one https://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1440101956/Motorcycle-font-b-round-b-font-font-b-headlight-b-font-ybr125-font-b-headlights-b.jpg

Cheers.

Odd

What year is your bike?
Has it had the headlight replaced?

as far as I can see no YBR125 uses that head light bulb

No dip beam should work
No you should not drive on main beam unless there is no oncoming traffic it is an offence but you not lightly to get done

Halfords are rubbish at bikes !

I thought thats how the YBR headlight was meant to work?

Dipped beam is on permanantly and full beam on when you flick the switch.

Both gave pretty crap light output though. 60 mph backroad with no street lights were a little daunting.

He is referring I think to the side light AKA the running light (small bulb at bottom of headlight ) head light is NOT or this is not correct

Never seen that fitting before... My 07 ybr uses a BA20D fitting (which is kinda similar) but at 35w each filament (dipped and full beam in same bulb)

Turn key, little side light (wedge type bulb) comes on. Start it, dipped beam comes on. Flick switch for full beam. If you've got no dipped beam is either a knackered bulb (one of the 2 filaments gone) or its not getting power.

Disconnect bulb. Use a tester on both filaments. If that's good, check you've got 12v at the connector with the engine running.

Later YBRs used an h4 bulb I believe, which is nothing like yours!

The YBR 125 uses the same rubbish BA20D bulbs that my Varadero was fitted with - you would be lucky if you could read a map with it at night!

There are 2 filaments, but yours has probably blown the low beam one.

You can get a 35W version, but they are rubbish too.

I binned mine and made an adapter to take 6000k HID Hi-Lo bulbs, and now I can see and be seen at night. Plenty of room under the fairing to hide the slimline ballasts.

My YBR is a 2008 fuel injected, i dont know if the headlight has been replaced tbh. Its a brand new bulb from halfords so could it be the wiring is fucked and its not working on low beam? Here is a video so you can see what i mean about the bulb, cheers.

Yup... Deffo not working!!

Not sure that looks like a standard/original headlamp... But advice remains the same. Either half the bulb's knackered or its not getting any leccy... A tester will be your friend here...!

Has the bike previously had front end damage, and someone put a cheap-ass eBay headlamp on?

Show us the back of it, where the bulb clips in...

Do you want me to take a picture of all the wires inside the headlight? The bulb is a white clip that slots on. Thanks for all the replies.

The wiring loom behind the headlight is a tight fit and a mess, well it is on mine anyway. You could try jiggling the wires around a bit and see if that kicks it into life.

The last time a changed my headlight bulb it only worked when the headlight was hanging out loose but then wouldn't work once i'd secured it all back in place. I had to tape the wires into neat bunches to make it work.

I had the opposite problem with the indicator wires, when i tidied them up the indicator would come on and then stay on unblinking. When i cut them loose and let them get tangled and crushed by the back of the headlight, it worked again.

Just something maybe worth trying before you start buying stuff.

whatever the colours are - the black one will be the earth - and the other 2 will be live.

Neither will be live without the engine running. One will be live when the engine's on and the other will be live when the engine's on and high beam switch is on...

Unclip the connector and test the wire with a testing thing, under those conditions.

If that all works as it should, unclip the bulb and check there's an unbroken circuit across both filaments. (one at a time)

It's worth noting that the ybr out the box can cope with a 35w bulb, so if you need another one - you can go a bit bigger and not fry anything or worry about melting/current draw.

That's why i mentioned about a picture of the back of the bulb - to see if your bulb holder is standard or has been modified for that awful bulb you've got in there!

(the BA20D isn't much better though)

Night riding on the YBR used to scare the bejeezus out of me, fucking tealight in a jamjar would be more effective.

Thanks for the help.

I have 2 pictures hopefully these show you something, there are splits in the insulation but the wires seem connected still.
