I like the warmth heated grips give off. I've had some R&G ones on my bike in the last two winters. They are, however, very firm grips and don't really do well at gripping, and as such this summer I removed them and ran some progrip 732s, which feel great.

My r&g grips arse nearly worn out, I'm not sure they will survive another winter so thoughts of replacement loom. I like the r&g controller, a single big button that cycles through 5 heat settings and off, I can just bash at it with my thumb and I have heat.

What's available that feels more like a conventional grip, a bit softer and perhaps with a higher coefficient of friction? How long will such a product last? I'm not prepared to replace £80 grips every thousand miles.

What about the heater pads that go under conventional grips? Would these work with my r&g controller or am I doomed to one or two heat settings with these?

Particularly of interest are Honda OEM heated grips, do they last a decent amount of riding, do they feel like conventional grips or are they rock hard?

What about shoving some Grip Puppies over them? That's what I do.

I have Honda OEM heated grips on the VFR. They're very good for grip, nice rubbery nobbly finish to them but I have big paws so need the extra girth (fnar) that Grip Puppies add.

I had these on my vfr for 5 years:
https://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/product/oxford-premium-sports-hotgrips-of692/3682

did 60k miles with them and still loads of life left in them.
Comfy, grippy, and toasty warm.

Worth the dosh, and if you look around you can get them for less than that infinity price.

I have just got a set to put on my blackbird.

I've got the Oxford premium sports grips at the moment. They are definitely 'Grippy'.

The downside of that is the left hand grip is wearing pretty fast. They've only been on since February and I cant see them lasting into next summer.

I put Roxter ones on the Pan and they have been absolutely fine. Plenty grippy and warm enough. Cheap too under £30.

The control isn't as nice as the R&G one - it's a dial but if you are going to use your old controller then they may be worth a look.

Tried grip puppies. Hated them. Makes grips too big, make my hands ache after a long ride, no good in the rain even with grips on full blast.

Matt, is there any chance you can run a multimeter across one of your roster grips and tell me the DC resistance? It will be a couple of ohms.

Hold on, how have you worn out heated grips in a thousand miles? Mine have done 50,000 and a look a bit shagged but are still fine.

Monkeypony, you can get replacement grips for oxford systems so you don't jhave to fork for a whole set.

Am tempted by a set of Oxfords...

Symtec do heated grips which are a thin film that fit under your normal grips.
You can also get cheap chinese ones which are similar but probably aren't as good (thicker but less elements.).

The Chinese ones I used consisted of a heating elements that goes over your regular grips, then some heat-shrink to go over the element.

They worked just fine given that they cost about £3 £2.19 and had a simple on-off switch. Being on top of the grips means that you get the heat very quickly, without pissing it away heating up the grips and bars.

I've just splurged an entire £8.19 on actual heated grips that also work just fine, but are quite hard. In retrospect, the £2.19 over-grip elements are probably better - I may buy another pair or two.

Muffs.
Why has no-one mentioned muffs.
All the rage last winter judging by posts on here.

I mention as I don't like heated grips as the back of my hands and thumbs don't benefit. So I use the lobster 2 finger (or 3 finger depending how described) type gloves instead.

I may try heated grips for the CB500 commuter as I need to replace the grips at some point. Might as well replace with something useful. Depends how they wear. Judging by posts above, not too well. I'd certainly want more than a couple of winters out of them (I don't swap bikes that often). That said, for similar money to the Roxter grips above muffs can be had. So I'm pondering Confused Thinking

I use Daytona heated grips. Roasting and extremely grippy. Combined with muffs, you are on to a winner. Warmer than summer, I'm sure I rode in snow to work with no gloves once, motorway travel on a 125 Laughing

advocate of the muff here, combine these with heated grips and its like central heating for the hands.

nothing like sticking your fist in a nice warm furry muff of a cold winter morning. (someone was going to type it! it may as well be me)

edit to say ive used the Symtec heated filaments under the standard grips before and found the decent enough.

I think its related to how much of a death grip one has on the bars. I think I grip the bars a little tight with my forefinger, trying to work on that. Still managed about 8k on the r&g heated grips. I suspect some of it might be engine vibration, my twin is a lumpy thing that you know is there.

Resistance of symtecs? I Note that the ones for sale in the USA have fancy controls and we get rocker switches. How easy is it to replace grips installed over symtecs without damagimg them?

For reference, it looks like my r&g grips are 13 ohm on the clutch side and the throttle side has failed, so won't be refitting them.

I suspect roxters at 2.66 amps or so might fry an r&g controller given their system draws about 1.8 amps. I might have enough safety margin... Might test off the bike with a car battery.

Oh yes, definitely a Thumbs Up for muffs - I'd always get some Tuccanos first, before worrying about heated grips.

Mine went back on* yesterday.

+1 for the oxfords, early days as I only installed mine yesterday but so far so good, only been using them on 50% and that is pleanty hot for these mornings. Way more grip than I had with the stock grips on the er6f.

Another +1 for Oxfords. Had a brand new set fitted thanks to being in an accident and they're great.

But if you have muffs or even hand guards, I'd suggest fitting those first because they're really good. I don't use muffs because I think they're ugly...

Paddy has got this right. Daytona grips are the hottest of the hot from previous experiences.

FWIW the Oxford catalogue (look under accessories, page 60+ of the catalogue, not the download) lists replacement grips at £30 per side rrp.

At that price those Roxter ones look a good bet. Did a Google and allegedly Roxter are the same as supplied to/for/by Oxford (or are the cut price Oxford offerings Shocked ). Would need that confirming, don't believe everything on the interwebnet don't ya know.

Can't get on with muffs. Had hideous orange hand guards on a 125, worked OK but wouldn't fit on my 535. Just ordered some that mount in place of bar ends with LEDs on for added fun fitting and enhanced invisibility.

I can attest to the effectiveness of the Daytona grips, as this week the right hand one has failed. I've had a toasty warm left hand and painfully cold fingers on the right. The controller knob could be better and there are only two levels, but they do get properly hot.

I didn't get on with tucano muffs - they were brilliant at keeping my hands warm, but interfered with my ability to operate the indicators and the clutch. I have hand guards instead and while they're not as effective as muffs, they reduce the windchill on the fingers enough for the heated grips to work better - i.e. I don't have roasting palms and freezing knuckles.
