Hi, So a friend of my old man is getting back on a bike, BUT, has no CBT.

He seems to think he can ride a 125 on grandfather rights. But after having a good look, im sure that he is only allowed to ride a 50cc.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Thank you Smile Smile

He can ride a 50cc ped without doing CBT assuming he passed his driving test before February 2001.

Did he ever take a bike test? If he has no bike classifications on his licence then, yes, he'll be needing a CBT for a 125. I too am under the impression that all he would be able to ride without is a 50

So what licence did he have when he had a bike?

is the entitlement still showing on his licence?

If his provisional was issued prior to 1982 125 laws; and he has never 'updated it' he was granted provisional M/C entitlement util his 70'th birthday....

If his provisional was issued after 1982, then you had to 'opt in' on the application to obtain provisional M/C entitlement, and it was valid ONLY for two years. If you passed the car licence within that period, provisional M/C entitlement was extended, as before until 70.

BUT If he did NOT have provisional M/C entitlement on his licence when he passed his car test, either because he never opted in, or the entitlement was out of date, then he would NOT have been awarded perpetual provisional M/C entitlement...

From 1990 'ish' CBT came into force, and provisional entitlement was placed on the licence for duration of licence again, BUT only if 'Validated' by CBT cert.

But, what ever the grandad rights may be.... if he reckons he might have some... he ent ever got a licece, and he ent ridden (Legally) for a heck of a long time.... he s a LEARNER... so why not stop stupid questions before they get asked, by pedantic plod or daft insurance companies, and just do the bludy lesson, its hardly like the entry exam for the Krypton factor....he might actually enjoy it,and may even learn something from it.... like how much a DAS course will cost him, after some-one at the school has let him sit on an ER6 or something.

Thank you everyone, I agree that he may as well just do the CBT anyway.

Not sure of this photo of his licence changes anything?

Regardless of what the law states he could ride I would recommend he get some lessons. The roads are busy now and he needs to be safe.

tri means he can only ride - tricycle, trike, motorized tricycle.. or whatever you call it.

Anything motorized on two wheels and over 50cc he will need to do the CBT first.

Photo shows that he has an AM license and a P license which allows him to ride two slightly different variations of 50cc mopeds without a CBT. Younger people would have a 122 code which means they need a CBT.

I guess he has an A (or maybe A1 now) in the 'provisional entitlement' section of his counterpart... if he doesn't then he'll have to apply for that before he can ride a 125 even with a CBT Smile

I read that licence as category A entitlement (I.e motorcycle) as of 2013.

Therefore he could quite legally go and hop on an R1 Laughing

His car licence allows him to ride a trike (that's the code 79tri)

He has grandfather rights for a 50cc

CBT time

Wasn't that the provisonaL category then? So he never actually got a license.

Tef was probably going a bit senile by then, but he might remember the situation.

Agree. My old man has had a full license since the 60's but now doesn't feel safe on the roads (apart from pootling about the country lanes on a 125)
