When buying a bike, how many miles before you consider the engine near the grave?

I'm in the market for a big boy bike, so it's ready once I pass and I have a reliable bike for work.

Most examples near me seem as this one https://www.gumtree.com/p/honda-motorbikes/honda-ntv-650/1081695920
Around 40,000 miles.

I assume big bikes can run for longer without dying compared to 125s?

Depends on the bike.

I bought a blade with 17,000 miles on it and because it had been ridden hard, it was really suffering. Ditto with a zxr750 back in the day when the engine let go.

Have a Honda CB1300 and at 50,000 miles it just keeps going.

Depends on the model to me. Goldwing/Deuville/NTV/CB500 are just run in at that sort of mileage.

It's an NTV, old 90s dispatch riders favourite shaftie.

NTVs cannot be killed and in a mad max future post apocalypse biker gangs will be riding them.

I rode mine to 138K, I also strongly suspect it had been clocked and was closer to 238K. Usual wear and tear though as parts eventually fail. I also tended to bodge and neglect it and ride it through winters.

Sickpup's NT400 (based on the same engine) was sold to bella with 215K on it and it still ran fine.

The only things to watch out for are:

The collector box where the downpipes join, they are mild steel and rot.

The starter relays rot inside out (look for green gunk)

The reg/recs die (but it is a Honda).

Also radiators are NOT available for love or money, a VFR750 rad fits nicely though.

2nd gear jumpiness (which means a clutch basket change) which means put into 2nd give it the beans. You should NEVER go over 3500rpm in 1st or 3nd.

It's expensive btw.

There are so many low mileage bikes out there that you'd really have to be a beggar rather than a chooser to go for something high mileage.

I've had my GS in to 5 dealers as a potential PX and each of them has said a variant of "Oooh, 13,500 miles, need to ding it for that, average is 3,500 a year." Shocked

That's cos they're expecting to sell it to a poser, not someone who just wants to get to work Smile

238K on a bike? Insane. That's the sort of mileage you expect out of a diesel 406 estate (bloody good workhorses, those), not a petrol bike. Tough as old boots eh.

Given that some geezer in 'Murica has run his CBR600f to over 250,000 miles and counting give's me confidence that my measly 52,000 miles is nowt to be worried about.

But then I don't take it that easy so mine is probably an impending disaster within the next 50k.

Searching for a GSXR1000 K5, (because Paddy. said so Rolling Eyes) and found this gem.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-GSXR-1000-STUNNING-BIKE-BE-QUICK-LOOK-AT-THIS-WOW-750-600-BARGAIN-PX-BIKE-/151420111372?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2341578a0c

Yes that's 155k from a Superbike. So I don't think mileage is really an issue if it's been looked after.

(Well aware I courier has a GSXR1000 K5 that's probably well north of 200k by now.).

No, that's a misprint and the text says under 16K.

I guess the question is, will it be half the miles and twice the fun? If so then that's gotta be worth something. I'm of the opinion that there are plenty of cars and bikes that would go to the moon and back on mileage and still run fine, it's just a case of maintenance, and at some point it would be costing way too much to keep it running so new vehicle time.

Balls, I'd better go and buy it then as it seem suspiciously cheap.

There's still the one that courier has knocking on at around 200k.

A lot of iconic older bikes are probably overpriced, maybe put it down to the fact that the guy saw one when he was younger, idolised it and then slapped down more than it was worth now he had more to spend than when he was younger. A mistake I kinda made myself with the Ace.

I like more your backup plan. The Honda owner has mention its a project. That sounds outright scary to me.

Probably is a good idea to shop around more or haggle a little bit for the backup one.

Looking at ebay completed listing I see you can buy XF650 for about £1000 on less then 25k:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Motorcycles-Scooters-/422/i.html?_from=R40|R40|R40&_sop=15&_nkw=suzuki+xf+650&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

This one on 8k was the same price as your backup one:
