With a F1RST!!!!!

Quite pleased with myself but will miss the learning aspect a bit.
Kind of like how I missed the excitement of lessons once I'd passed my DAS.

So...... Maybe I'll think about persuing the training aspect to become an observer.... Maybe not.

Either way... Proud to be an official rider Geek!!

Do you ride a VFR and have a Schubeth helmet? I've nearly ticked off by whole IAM bingo card. Razz

Does this mean you can progress to learning how to ride a motorcycle in excess of 60 mph?
Bet you're looking forward to riding over your first manhole cover.
Congrats anyway, you did it and passed and are probably a safer rider for doing it.

Did you feel it actually taught you a lot, or is it more just a good experience and fine-tuning your riding/OMG certificate! at the end Razz?

I've thought about giving it a go, but considering the cost - i'd hope to be coming out as some sort of super-rider at the end Thinking I was pleasantly suprised by BikeSafe - not so much by what I learned, but the attitude and conversations with the police bikers were a lot more interesting and less patronising than I expected Laughing

They then proceeded to plug IAM as being 'the next step' to superior riding and safety etc. My current impression of IAM in general is a high-viz clad gang turning their nose up at 'novice' bikers to be honest Whistle

Yes I'm a better rider. Than I was before, not better than everyone else.
I only passed in March 2013 so the additional training was really beneficial. Especially regarding positioning and speed. It has genuinely helped me corner much better and faster. I also overtake with much more control and have learnt many of the danger points to look out for before making the decision to commit to the overtake.

In my club, there is a massive mix of bikes ranging from RNineT's to Fireblades to Harleys and Gixxers etc etc and the people are pretty down to earth. Observed rides are serious (but once you get comfortable in letting somebody constructively criticise your ride its really useful).

They organise lots of trips to to places like Wales or Ireland, or to the Moto GP in Europe etc.

Group rides use the drop off tail end Charlie method, are usually fairly brisk and you get to learn lots of new bike friendly routes whilst you're at it.

£139 for everything although you do contribute to your observers fuel for 1-2-1's.

If it saves you an accident, just one, it'll have been worth it. And I'm sure with better planning, positioning and control, it does help reduce the risk.

A lot of IAM members are police or ex police, all of the examiners are police examiners. If you're riding like a complete lunatic, yeah, they'll think you're pushing your luck in life's lottery, and maybe someone else's luck too. I mean let's face it, if 200kg of metal and plastic hits a car at 80+ there's a strong likelihood that the man/woman/child in that vehicle will get seriously hurt too!

If you feel like a novice that may get looked down upon, then you're telling yourself that you are not as good as you'd like to be so I'd go for the extra training anyway.

Hey, there'll be people on here who've been riding for years, have all the experience, got all the T shirts etc who say its a load of rubbish but one things for sure, it will make you safer.

You always get people that will criticise. 'Bovvered'? 😀

£139 seems pretty reasonable actually.

And from what I've heard, the contribution towards fuel costs depends on the observer or the club. Sometimes they don't ask for anything, or just to buy them coffee and breakfast or something.

Something I'd consider at some point, although not right now.

I'm yet to do Bikesafe, which I plan on doing next year, and I still feel like I am improving quite a bit without any instruction, just on the road experience. So maybe one day.

If Brussels still allows us to ride motorbikes when I'm in my 40s.

This has been on my todo list for a while now. Having only passed 2 years ago and 90% of my riding being in town, I figured I've still got a fair amount to learn. At £140, it seemed reasonable enough.

Ultimately, we all know deep down, if you hoon it everywhere, you're gonna come a cropper sooner or later. Learning to ride safe is always going to have a pipe'n'slippers reputation, but I'd like to be still around and walking when I'm an old foggie with my pipe'n'slippers. As mentioned, £140 is pretty good value, if it gives you a little insurance discount, just prevents a single incident and gives you an excuse to ride out a lot of some folks far more experienced than yourself.

Congratulations! Getting extra training is something that's definitely worthwhile after passing.
I did IAM training some years ago but never actually sat the test unfortunately. I think I needed to push to be forwarded for the test and was expecting someone in the club at the time to do the pushing for me, and it never happened so I lost interest and stopped going, but I remember all the very useful training and would also recommend them.

Never done a Bikesafe, but I think I should just to brush up on skills etc. They do seem to be oversubscribed though.
