I had a test ride of a Ducati 748 recently. Here's my wee review of it.

I'm sure everyone else has been here before. Laughing

Cheers

good review.

I've never ridden 748. Thank you for the warning. Looks great though Laughing

Not really a review is it..if you're completely honest. Razz

...and I read no warning. I read about a bike that possibly needed suspension and TPS adjusting.

Main reason I wouldn't get a 748? Rockers flaking and weak charging system.

Aye, as HT has said, do not take this as a warning against 748's or any other bike. My warning is have a proper look at a bike before you test ride it for test ride sake. A proper 748 should be a joy to ride. If anyone has a 748 that hasn't been shagged by an idiot and they want to give me a shot I'm happy to do a retest. Very Happy

The 748/916 series of bikes are either a love it or hate it job. they were undersprung from new being set up for a 10st rider which most aren't, coupled with they need strong positive inputs to manoeuvre them when there not setup right they can handle like a dog. as the op discovered rear ride height is important on these but being a single swinger is awkward to set unless you have the factory tool which is expensive for what it is. with the suspension setup right they handle superbly and they hold a line through a bend like nothing else.

they do require muscling about compared to other bikes but I find my 916 turns in superbly and through the twisties is fully capable of reeling in more modern/powerful bikes but it's 103bhp leaves it underpowered on the straights compared to virtually any modern litre bike. I think they've stood the test of time well and are a fully capable bike that with some practice you may be able to use the full potential of, there not the cheapest to run but at the age there at now there not hugely unreliable. most rockers that will fail have done so by now and most charging systems will have been repaired/upgraded

If I was buying a Ducati 748 I would be doing so purely for its looks and the fact I always wanted one. Any modern 600cc sport bike is more powerful and handles better.

Handling is outstanding and it makes a lot of sense around a track although on the road, I don't like.

Set up properly, it is a joy on the track and just the most intuitive race bike I've ever had the pleasure to ride. Mind you, I might not be the best person to comment as I wrote one off at Cadwell as I was trying to get my elbow down.

Technically, I succeeded...

I don't know what had been done to the 748 I had been on. It didn't want to lean at all. Apparently the guy that had it before only had it to pose on, but someone had seriously fucked it up. As I had said, every panel was fucked. I think it had been involved in a wee crash too. I was pretty gutted to be honest. I'll try and hunt down a non fucked with 748 to have a shot of.
