So, as the title implies really.

Basically, I'm just in the position of looking at taking my UK bike test in the near future, after riding an R125 for about two and a half years (*don't laugh* Wink ) and clocking up around 30,000 miles and I'm looking around at what to buy as my first big bike.

I was initially thinking of getting an R6 because I like the look of them and Yamaha appear to have a fairly decent reputation for reliability, from what I can gather but, I thought, why limit myself and also because I'm no spring chicken Sad some level of comfort is an issue, as my lower back and knees suffer after a while on the R125.

I know relatively little about bikes, so I am initially going by what I like the look of, which happens to be sports bikes and then taking things from there.

Recently I came across (not literally but, close) the Daytona 675 and Wub There are quite a few around at what seem, reasonable prices for ones around five years old. So I am looking for some knowledge from, well...the more knowledgeable folks of BCF.

What I am wanting to know is, how reliable are these bikes and are there any known issues with them and how comfortable are they in relation to other sports bikes? I'm six foot two with longish legs and would be using the bike for most things, commuting, having fun and a bit of travelling/touring. Also, it will be probably end up being kept outside, unless I find a place with a garage and will be ridden in all weather, except snow and ice, so how do they stand as far as rusting goes?

Thanks for the reply. Thumbs Up

Every time I hear Honda, I think rust though.

I guess the only way to find out how comfortable the Daytona 675 is, would be to try it myself, as what one person finds comfortable, another might not.

Interesting about Yamaha too, I wasn't really aware of that although, I had heard something about the gear boxes but, thought this was a small and limited period issue that had been resolved.

Daytona 675 is.. small.

But you may quite like it after riding R125 for so long.

Nice bikes, sometimes I think I should have got one instead of Fireblade.

Aye, I like the fireblade too but, think it may be a bit much to jump on after the 125.

By small I didn't mean engine size. I meant the size of the bike, how it feels to sit on one. Probably not the best bike for you if you are 6'2 or over though.

I wouldn't recommend jumping from 125cc onto 1000cc. Nothing wrong with it, but probably you won't enjoy so much power so quickly. It can be intimidating.

Like that colour scheme too Thumbs Up

I did briefly consider an R1 at one point, as my local dealer back in the IoM had a good deal on one with ridiculous low mileage on it (in the 100's), as it had only been used for a photo shoot with Conor Cummins but, I came to my senses. I don't think it helped that the bloke in the shop, who I'd got to know quite well, nearly choked on his cup of tea when I enquired about it. Laughing

This thread sums up most of my Daytona ownership:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=253677

The only additions being that I've done a lot more trackdays, I'm a lot faster, and I'm commuting 1200 miles per month on it. The comments about it being uncomfortable, if it fits you it's actually fine. A decent test ride is required.

Against similar vintage 600s, I tried all of them except the Gixxer. The CBR is tiny with a boring power delivery, the zx6r is similar to the Daytona but physically bigger and it it just didn't float my boat as much. The R6 is phenomenal when you're on it (above 10k) but an uncomfortable ballache and from experience needs about 15 bolts off to remove a fairing; the Daytona is more like 6.

I found my R1 comfy as hell.

The Daytona I've been using to race is perfect, I can image long distances getting sore but around 3 hours sitting on it should be fine. they aren't great on fuel, even the R1 got more MPG.

The Daytona is all out better I'm afraid Sad

More grunt low down, better bits of kit, Daytonas are also 06ish onwards making that an ancient piece of tech.

Ridden an 08 CBR600F, was surprised it was comfy, but god was it boring.

Early CBR600RR's come cheap and still are good motorcycles.

I've never had a go on a Daytona, but that bike must be superb. It's light, it's short and it has a unusual engine with more than enough power out put. Thumbs Up

All out better in performance and kit but the CBR of that era is fantastic bike all round and I'm sure users on here will back that up, again Paddy you have ridden fast bikes and can compare whats boring compared to a 1000, it may have boring power delivery but coming from a yzf 125 to a near 100bhp bike will feel plenty and you can save your self some serious cash for track days and petrol!

Had my 2007 for a couple of years now, not ridden another sports bike so cant compare. I'm 5'10" and fits me well but does tend to get uncomfy quite quickly (hour or so) but that may be cause Im 45 rather than the bike lol. Deffo go out for a nice test ride, love mine but may chop it in for a new Street at some point (test ride one anyway).

I compare most bikes to my Varadero, the slowest of the bunch, and the Street, the most hooligan of the bunch.

In all, the Daytona is up there, better than the 600RR, more involved than the R1, the soundtrack is bwaaaaapppp and its handling is top notch.

I'd still prefer my ST, but as a sporty first, the Daytona is king IMO.

Until you have ridden one, you'll still see the CBR as "fun" but trust me, its fucking dire in comparison. Thumbs Up

FWIW, I think that's mainly an issue with their budget 125s.

I've bought three SH300s and one VFR. The VFR is mostly aluminium and the engine casing paint has flaked some after 9 years commuting and living outside, but the SHs have a steel frame and no sign of rust anywhere other than discolouration on the exhaust welds, which is to be expected.

Nah.. that is a good point, no one has threatened to call the police and banned me from a BBQ with the Triple, however in the grand scheme of things, that bike was geared to 90mph absolute tops. The triple is still 1 wheeling then and can possibly get pulled up in 4th at that speed Shocked

I've had my 2007 Daytona 675 for a couple of years, and I absolutely love it.

The first thing that struck me was how high the seat is, when I first got on it felt like climbing on top of a fence. But this was getting on it after a Yamaha FZ6, so it was always going to be very different. After a few miles it just felt right. I'm 5'10", so being 6'2" you shouldn't notice the height so much. I'd echo what others have said and suggest a decent test ride on one because you may find it a little cramped. I have to adjust my position every now and again because it can get a bit achy, but this is a very minor issue for me.

The Triple engine is by far the best thing about this bike. It is very flexible, very powerful, very torquey and really enjoyable to use. If you want to leave the bike in 6th and chill out, it will do it all day long. If you want to crack on a bit and play, it is lightning fast. It handles very nimbly and lightly, and feels very intuitive.

The Daytona looks fantastic, even for a bike that's 8 years old (the earliest ones are 2006), and it feels like an occasion every time I ride it.

Mine has proved to be very reliable and easy to live with. A lot of them have the Datatool alarms on as standard, which are extremely annoying, and as much as they claim not to, they will sap your battery. This is the only issue I've had with mine, and while trying to change a dead battery the alarm started going off and wouldn't stop. Hateful thing.

I have also ridden an R6, and after riding the Daytona I hated the R6. It was too twitchy and grabby in comparison, I felt it was either all or nothing. A great riding machine for a biker who wants to go as fast as they can everywhere, but it just wasn't for me.

Find a well looked after example and you shouldn't have any trouble. If it proves to be a bit too harsh a riding position for you, try the Street Triple also.

When I tested one the only thing I didn't like about it was that it had such an aggressive riding position and I was putting too much weight through the bars, felt like it was trying to snap my thumbs off every time I tried to relax... I would probably have got used to it but bought a street instead.

I did find some nice roads for testing just north of Leeds but low-ish speeds and bumpy roads were not the Daytona's natural habitat. When I got to fast flowing roads, what a bike Cool

Cheers for all the replies guys. Thumbs Up

From what has been posted here and in Slacker24sevens thread this does appear to be a bike I'd like and awful lot Very Happy it seems a bit better of an all rounder, power wise, than the R6 too from what I've read.

The only thing that concerns me at all is how comfortable I'll find the riding position, as I do like to ride for a fair few hours when I can. I guess there's only one way to find out though.

I do find it a little odd that I've not seen many of these on the road though, which is partly why I posted in here originally, as I was wondering if there had been some issues with these bikes but, it would appear not.

Also, for the money I'd get when I sell my R125, I'd have a fairly sizeable amount to put towards a used, low mileage 675. Laughing

Again, thanks for all the input folks, it's been really helpful. Thumbs Up

Grab a test ride if you can.

Say you've read plenty of reviews that the comfort is hit and miss, I reckon after an hour, you'll know if its right or not.

I find it remarkably comfy Laughing

Get some quotes on Insurance while your at it, after passing my test (at 42) it was quite expensive to insure (but didn't have any no claims and only riding 3 months) decided instead to get a Street Triple as it worked out about half as much. Had no problem with test rides from Triumph dealer but some (non Triumph) would allow test rides until you've had full license a year.
