Hey guys,

Just had a discussion with a pal as to whether you can take your motorcycle test on one of these new fangled automatic machines. He reckons you can and that because there is no motorcyle automatic catagory you'd get a standard licence ie. be able to ride any bike (subject to age ect).

I reckon you have to do it on a manual but have just checked the direct gov site there is no mention of manual/auto when it comes to the full licence.

He was banging on about not being fair as you can only drive an auto car if you take the test in an auto.

What do ya reckon?

Your pal is wrong, if you test on an auto you get a auto limitation.

For doing your CBT it makes no different if you do it on a geared bike or on a twist and go. As baggy says, for your full license if you do it on an auto then that's what your license will be for.

Direct him to BCF? Are you trying to traumatize him? Razz

If you put 'motorcycle automatic test' into Google then the first result tells you everything. Wink

I never did see the logic behind that - when my daughter had her first driving lesson in a car at the age of 12 (with youngdriver.eu) it took her less than 2 minutes to figure out the gears.

She didn't learn anything from me or her mom, we both drive automatic cars.

The first time I rode a bike was on my CBT 6 years ago, and it took just a few seconds to figure out the gears - after a mate told me how to do it over the phone and I watched a YouTube video.

I can't imagine how retarded you would have to be to warrant having to do a different test to switch between automatic and manual gears.

There's no car automatic "category" either, it's a code 78 endorsement on category B, same as sitting your test on a scootay gets you an A-variant with the same code.

I know BCF is better then the government, but here is the DVLA info anyway:

Automatic and semi-automatic motorcycles

If you pass your test on a motorcycle with automatic or semi-automatic transmission you’ll only get a full licence for those types of motorcycle.

Seems pretty clear to me, if you use auto you get auto license only Smile

I think it's more a question of clutch control than the gears. On a 125 its not so much of an issue, on bigger bikes you need to use the clutch a lot more.

I rode a ZZR 600 for my last CBT, and an ER5 on the previous CBT (I'm going to do my full test soon, honest Tef) and I didn't really notice any difference between those and my 125 with respect to clutch control - so maybe it depends on the bike.

I still don't believe there is enough difference between automatic and geared bikes to warrant having to do another complete driving test - it's just for the cash.
