My GS125 has bit of a fuel leak,

In the Life of my GS125 thread I have a rather considerable fuel leak from my Carb If I put the tank tap on the "on" position the bike just turns over and over and over if I put it onto "reserve" it just pisses out of the overflow? At the bottom of the carb.

Any suggestions?

Pics in Project thread.

Pull it off, drain it and check the float?

Also check the tap.. might be blocked up "on" position

So if the floats are stuck is that why it wouldn't start, Stupid question I presume but just never had a carb fault before.

If the float is stuck open it should still start as there is fuel in the carb which you have proved when it leaks out !!

If the float is stuck with debris like your photo then there is a good chance that all that crap is also blocking your jets which is stopping the bike from starting..

Actually a flooding carb is very likely to stop the engine starting. Air/fuel mixture will ignite from about 9:1 to 19:1. Any richer or leaner and it probably won't fire.

Swapped the carb over for the pictured 1 above after a thorough cleanse and no leakage althought the bike fired into life for 20 seconds after jiggling throttle cable then died again.

Crying or Very sad

replace the float needle and it's seat. Make sure the float floats. The float needles will almost certainly be fucked, they are service items. If the floats are punctured it will also flood.

Can't see how these problems could have appeared considering it hasn't moved an inch under its own steam.

I'm wondering if it's something Iv done wrong as it ran sweet as a nut before, and when I removed the cable ties that where holding the throttle cable to the frame it's movement was being restricted by the cable ties and it seemed to do the trick.

Well until it died and wouldn't start again.

if the bike is more than a few years old, it's quite possible the float needle is fucked. remove it from whatever carb you will end up using and post a pic.

Sounds like fuel tank is empty or tap is filled with crap if reserve works but on doesnt. Whats tank like inside, any rust? do you have a filter?
1) strip/clean fuel tap.

Float needle, is the rubber tip good? clean any reside or corrosion from the seat. Rub the body of the needle with aluminium foil to prevent it sticking.

Clean it all:

Jets out, soak in a small sealed container of carb cleaner overnight - sealed because this stuff evaporates <15c.

Remove diaphragm and rubber seals. Squirt lots of carb cleaner into all carb passages, let it soak, poke them with copper wire, then spray some more. Repeat several times as necessary.

Next day, poke pilot jets through with a strand of fine copper wire. Then two strands twisted together, then three, until its clear.

I didn't get any pictures but I used pretty much a whole can of carb cleaner on both carbs are thoroughly stripped and clean, the floats where not stuck and the needles look brand new.

Oh and the Tank tap seems to be working fine now and the carb isn't leaking anymore but the bike just keeps turning over. Apart from when it ran for 20 seconds at about 6k rpm and died.

Surely if it was just a bit of dirt in the carb somewhere it would just run a bit rough.

Would the throttle cable adjustment cause an issue?
