Hi

I stripped the top end a few weeks back trying to find the cause of a rattle in the engine. This lead to me replacing the piston and rings/rebore which was needed.
It got rid of a bit of the noise (no more piston slap) but it still wasn't right.
Since then after a few more strip down -rebuilds i have replaced the timing chain and the tensioner. This has got rid of the main chunk of the noises but there's still this tapping sound...

Valve clearances are all spot on and the valves have been cleaned and lapped in with new stem oil seals.
Cams are rotating freely and the cam journals look fine.
I didn't change the timing guides as they looked fine but pretty much everything else up top has been checked/replaced...

A few different bike shops have told me it different things...
1. says it's the springs on the back of the clutch basket rattling.
2. said it's the timing chain tensioner (now replaced that aswell)
3. said it was valve guides
4. said it's the little end (new conrod needed)

I'm including a video of the clutch basket and the little end pin movement as i'm not sure how much movement is normal Laughing
Appreciate any advice Thumbs Up

First impression is cam chain rattle. What's the mileage?

It does sound like it but I've replaced the chain and tensioner (both genuine Yamaha)

There's plenty tension on the chain and the timing marks line up perfectly.

Mileage is 3000kms on the clock. The mot history tells me it had 870ish kms back in 2010 at which time the bikewas 10 year old 😳
So no idea really lol

Just googled that... With the cams bolted down I can move them side to side by probably .5mm maybe more.Never even thought it was an issue at the time so I'll double check that tomorrow.

Thanks

I've been googling valve stem to guide clearance as o remember at least one exhaust valve having quite a bit of wiggle just before being seated. It seemed that when I closed the valve I could close it off centre slightly by pushing it sideways and in. A little more pressure and it kind of clicked fully closed.

Hope I've explained that right. Could this cause this kind of noise?

Thanks for the replies 😄
