Probably done to death but I can't seem to collate the information.

I'm wanting a video camera to fit to the bike, as a more permanent fixture. I'm not interested in any helmet/wearable models. So not really GoPro,Drift, etc. and not in their 3 figure £ price territory.

This following a recent incident at a mini(ish) roundabout where an oncoming car straightlined it and came out on my side of the road. Much squeezing to the kerb ensued (I was already braking).

So what I want is...
Arrow something small and discreet, doesn't shout nick me.
Arrow waterproof
Arrow powered from bike. I can rig up usb adaptor/lead...but need that waterproof connection (silicon sealant perhaps?)
Arrow auto start on power up, auto end on power off.
Arrow loop record, so if memory card full it overwrites earlier stuff.
Arrow not expensive (see nick me comment above).
Arrow ...but reasonable quality, certainly to see the number plates clearly.

Thinking of trying to locate between forks. So some sort of mounting would be nice.

Anyone know of anything that can be used/adapted for the above?

Looking through the specs of these things it's hard to determine if they have loop record and the auto start/stop. Even looking through Techmoan (see I have looked). So would rather see what's recommended. Like would a SJ1000 do what I want? I guess ballpark price would be sub £100, or way less ideally (again, see nick me comment above).

Thank you in anticipation Thumbs Up

This doesn't fit all your criteria, but may be something of a reasonable (ish) compromise.

Have you looked at the Polaroid Cube? Thinking of getting one to sit on the (metal) petrol tank of my bike, maybe able to conjure up some other mounting for it too?

Seems small enough to chuck in a pocket when not in use, does loop recording & sub 100 bleeds?

I think the mobius can do all of that, though you'll have to get a seperate waterproof case.

I've been happy with mine the little I've used it so far (been mounted on a 'drone' style thing, so not too similar). As a vehicle cam, you can also get a lead which seperates the lens/sensor, which could be good for bikes - have the main bit hidden away and maybe the lens mounted with a small hole on the fairing or similar. Should make it less obvious, harder to steal and so on.

Have a look at

RePlay

These seem like great little cams. Quality is fantastic. Seems to hit most of you wants.
If I had the cash. I would be fitting one of these as a cam on the bike.

Other option is as Techmoan reviewed. Mobius Camera but with the lens mounted seperate. Which would allow for it to be fitted out of sight.

Waterproof-while-powered aspect is the kicker. I've yet to see anything that promises that.

The power/data socket on the (perfectly decent) SJ1000 is on the side. It looks like there's (just) room to drill through and you could gloop it, but you'd have to pull the cable (breaking your waterproofing) every time you needed to take the camera out of the waterproof case. If you're planning to leave it in place more-or-less indefinitely this might be OK.

The SJ4000 looks to be the same. Side socket, might be able to bodge it.

Sorry, nothing better immediately springs to mind.

Compromise might be to go wireless but with a mount that can be simply removed when parked and be able to hit the record button when setting off. Perhaps something like this image?

It's just that'll require some Heath Robinson farkling to fit a mount. Plus the idea of secure and easily removable appear at odds. Do they do a good real quick release camera mount for a budget action style camera?

Thinking although if can fit mount to multiple bikes easy to transfer.

...prefer to go with plan one but would be stupid not to consider other suggestions.

I bought SJ4000 DV camera it has full 1080p HD and it was £62, now I see them on ebay for £42, this is basically chinese GoPro with LCD screeen on the back.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SJ4000-HD-1080P-Sport-DV-FPV-12MP-Waterproof-Helmet-Car-Recorder-Camera-Cam-SDV-/281366218980?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item4182bbc8e4

You can mount it whenever you want it comes with box full with adapters - helmet, bars etc.

By the way all the connectors and adapters are 100% compatible with GoPro Very Happy

I am very happy with it have not connected the power to the bike and still do about 2 hours full HD recording. It has ALL the features you have asked for.

Probably I will by one more to have one facing front and one facing back to record all funny cyclists in London Laughing

See sample record here with camera mounted on my left mirror:

Yep. However when fitting it exactly as the OP desired and some other chap on here suggested in a big thread (someone please run a search), I ran into trouble with vibration.

The Roadhawk seems to be very susceptible to vibration. When stuck underneath the bikini fairing on my Fazer it would often record poor shaky footage or just cut out completely. Stuck to helmet, it works a treat, no problems. But I suspect it has issues keeping the SD card in place in it's slot, with vibration causing it to come loose or lose contact. Roadhawk keep banging on about making sure it's pushed in enough. On a number of occasions I've gone on a long ride and just found 10 mins of footage recorded... Sad As once cut out, it won't start recording again until you cut power and start up again.

Also, in this location, the mic picks the engine noise up with loads of rasp that sound awful. Dunno if this is just proximity or the rear cover which has the charging lead going through it and no sound pick up holes.

You may get better results mounting else where, but worth bearing in mind. Shame, as it fits the bell perfectly otherwise. BTW, I put a big write up on my blog, if you fancy a gander.

I've just had a look through your blog, the reason you are having vibration problems is that you haven't fixed the camera securely but just used a sticky pad. My camera is fixed to the bottom of the fairing on my Deauville using the rubber mount fixed with cable ties and this doesn't suffer from vibration even though the bike is vibey.

Agree to disagree here, if you have ANY better value for money 1080p action camera I will be the first to buy one, I doubt that very much:

You can adapt usb cable to do that. Given the fact that the battery holds for more then 2,5 hours the most simple way is to buy one extra battery for £5 and forget about it.

+1 for the mobius! As said before, you'll have to buy a waterproof case separately.

You know, I wouldn't mind, but I already mentioned the SJ4000 and highlighted the problem:

Arrow waterproof
and
Arrow powered from bike. I can rig up usb adaptor/lead...but need that waterproof connection (silicon sealant perhaps?)

How do you propose making it permanently waterproof while (presumably) still allowing the case to be opened?

Oh, I agree. Actually, I'd suggest helmet mounting it. But that's not the requirements and the SJ4000 doesn't meet "ALL" of them.

And another +1. I haven't actually mounted mine yet, but I have modded a joovuu case with a USB lead sealed into the back, so that when you put the camera in it slots onto the plug (Mobius has power on the back rather than the side like most). It will be mounted to ignition switched power eventually, but it's a low priority at the mo as the bike's misfiring so I've got to sort that before I'll actually be riding anywhere...
