What a miserable weekend in the F1 world, with Andrea de Cesaris dying in motorcycle accident as well.

There is a question of why they didn't safety car it. I expect those marshals might have some opinions on that as well.

It was under double waved yellows (i.e. slow and prepare to stop), there was no need for the SC.

Yeah, he left the track at ~200KPH so he must not have seen the flags nor been told on the radio.

Interesting blog by former F1 doctor. Not only on the injury sustained, but why he feels drivers have been pushing the boundaries with respect to the flag rules. Double waved yellows mean be prepared to stop. Judging by the fact Bianchi aquaplaned and the sheer speed he hit the tractor, I'm not sure it was being adhered to well.

https://formerf1doc.wordpress.com

It doesn't look good for Bianchi. 90% of people with this injury never regain consciousness. Sad time for F1.

Not sure if this is true but I saw somewhere he was driven to hospital as oppose to being flown because the chopper couldn't take off due to the weather, surely the organisers have got to be red flagging this race long before this happened if the chopper can't take off on safety grounds...

It's exactly what they do in moto gp so why not in F1?? I've heard various wrangles of pressure from the japs to keep the race going as u don't alter plans in japan apparently, I mean wtf next lol

They chose to drive, the helicopter could fly, maybe due to cranial pressure they didn't fly ?

They have flashing indicators on their wheels also for flags, the problem is that no driver reduces speed enough to stop under yellows, nor do they really slow down at all.

What needs to happen is that the procedures that are in place, needs to be enforced.

iirc, they can't race if they can't fly.

Ugly crash. A pity it had to occur at Suzuka, as with the Kato death 10 years ago, I wonder if serious questions will be asked of the circuit should the worst happen.

If they bring out the safety car every time a car leaves the track, we will just end up with a procession each week. It was a double yellow which imho is more than suitable....it was just unfortunate that Bianchi pushed his car past the limits of tyre and conditions on that very bend and spun off hitting the recovery truck.

Feel sorry for the guy, no doubt there will be more safety measures in place to make the sport even more boring, they signed up to take a risk at the end of the day, hope he makes a good recovery.

Imagine how boring TT and other road races would be if it was made safer every time someone had a serious or fatal accident, they take a risk and they love it, F1 is nothing like it used to be.

Eh. Pretty much where we are already. Last twenty years or so, the introduction of big wide boring tracks, yet more computerisation of the cars and so forth. It's telling that even basic overtakes sometimes get about six replays because there's so few of them in a "race" these days. Haven't been really into it since '96, when Hill grabbed the title.

Still, sucks about Bianchi, from what I read the boy has talent. Let's hope he sticks around long enough to hone it. Ironic that the recovery truck was brought out of reasons of safety yet that was the thing that brought him to grief.

To put things in a bit of perspective re safety etc. I work with probably 20-30 people with this type of injury a year. The reasons for their injuries are varied, but the most common in my experience(more common even than car/bike crashes) is falling down the stairs...

I think that we (and the FIA) need to realise that risk of injury is an inevitable side effect of driving a car at 200mph, and that Bianchi was just as likely to receive the same injury falling down the stairs of the motor home...

Just out of interest, do you think he will race again given the force of the crash? no one knows for certain how serious the injury is as its a bit hush hush atm but i'm guessing it's perhaps the end of his career sadly.

In all honesty, JonB is right, I think hits 50/50 if he will be alive in a months time.

I understand from his families statement that he has a diffuse axonal brain injury. What this means is that the axons of his brain cells (the bits that transfer signals from one cell to another) have been severed (well, ripped apart by the force of the crash). It is very likely that this is widespread throughout all areas of his brain.

He might regain consciousness, but I think he will need to consider himself extraordinarily lucky if he will be able to talk, feed himself and recognise people. I am pretty sure in saying he will never race again, and it is unlikely that, should he survive,t he would ever be able to live without significant care needs.

IIRC Massa had a nasty head injury from a spring flying off the car in front of him. He was touch and go at the time, but is ok now accept for that silly accent and lisp.

A safety car when there is heavy machinery on track is sensible imo.

That footage has been zoomed in. When it's not zoomed in you can see a tower to the right where a yellow flag is waved for about five seconds. Followed by some fucker waving a green flag like he's at a rave and he's dropped six E's.

liveleak link.

According to a comment on the video though.

Quote:
According the flag rule the flag informs the track conditions onward from the flag point. After the tractor moves the Sutils car backwards the track is empty from the flag point. He is doing like he suppose to do. Even if he would continue to wave the double yellow, it would not help cars approaching that place since they would see the flags exactly the same time than the accident per se. This video doesn't show the flag points before that place except the video screen on the previous straight that is blinking yellow.

I'm still none the wiser however it's a nasty crash.

As the bit you quoted hints at there are marshal posts all round a track. Any flag waved refers to the post you've passed to the next one, so a green flag is saying it is clear after you've passed that post. You learn that on your first ARDS day and Bianchi would've been familiar with it. As an F1 driver, he'd also've got a notification on his steering wheel along with a recommended sector speed and likely from the team over the radio.

The flag had nothing to do with the accident, as much as it sucks to say it, it's a cardinal sin to go off under yellow... If it'd've been a marshal injured instead of the driver he'd be taking a lot of flak and probably be banned.

I hope and pray he makes a meaningful recovery. And Michael Schumacher too, both very similar injuries and very similar long-term recovery processes.

I have three particular thoughts about this though.

1 - Driver's flag discipline is absolutely atrocious, and the fact the FIA take no action only reinforces the drivers lack of respect for the flags. Double waved yellows means PEOPLE ON THE TRACK, slow down and be prepared to stop. That means be able to stop in the distance you can see to be safe/clear, something we're all familiar with, or should be. There is absolutely no way Jules Bianchi was going slow enough to stop even if he had stayed on the track. But the FIA need to take action, because these guys are racers and slowing down in a race is a disadvantage to them and an advantage to their competitors, so a mandatory safety car if there are personnel or heavy machinery on the track is needed imo.

2 - Ayrton Senna, killed by a single blow to the head from a suspension piece. Henry Surtees, killed by a single blow to the head from a loose wheel. Maria De Vilotta, eventually died from injuries sustained after a blow to the head in a relatively low-speed accident. Felipe Massa, seriously injured by a single blow to the head from a loose coil spring. Fernando Alonso, Spa 2012, very nearly suffered a blow to the head in first corner crash, only avoided by sheer miraculous luck.
Jules Bianchi, long term remains to be seen, seemingly suffered only a blow to the head. The survival cell of a modern formula one car is incredibly strong, so much so that we just don't see injuries to drivers bodies anymore from crashes that in the recent past would absolutely have been fatal. But the drivers head is still incredibly vulnerable. The last vulnerable part.

3 - The last wet race at Suzuka, 1994, there was an accident at that very corner. Then a lap or two later, Martin Brundle aquaplaned off and barely missed the recovery tractor. He said years afterwards he thought he was going to hit it, and he was going to be killed. He probably would have been too, but luckily he missed it. Unfortunately he hit a marshal and badly broke their leg. So the last wet race at Suzuka there was a carbon copy accident, nearly identical. Same circumstances, same corner. There but for the grace of God. So so many variables that needed to fall into place for Jules' accident to happen. But so many variables that were KNOWN in advance, because they have happened before at other races in the wet, and specifically at a previous Japanese GP at that very corner.

It's exactly what they do in moto gp so why not in F1?? I've heard various wrangles of pressure from the japs to keep the race going as u don't alter plans in japan apparently, I mean wtf next lol

I have also heard that it couldn't take off due to weather.

Yet it did take off shortly afterwards, just not with Jules in it, which leads me to believe it was a clinical decision not to use the helo.

With a massive head injury and a build up of intercranial pressure, you don't want to risk further injury by going up in a helicopter where the air pressure could increase the ICP.

iirc, they can't race if they can't fly.

They can race if that is the case. This was covered on saturday evening after the qualifying, a suspiciously coincidental premonition almost.

They were discussing bringing the race forwards to avoid the worst of the typhoon weather, and what happens if the weather is too bad for the medical helicopter.

The race can go ahead if the medical helicopter is unable to fly, providing a police escort for land ambulance is available, and transit time to the hospital is less than "about 20 minutes", which is the time officially quoted in the FIA appendix H to the international sporting code.

I believe, given the severity of the accident and his injuries, if he regains consciousness, IF, he won't ever be able to dress or feed himself, walk or write, have useful cognitive processing skills.
Make no mistake, this is magnitudes more serious than Felipe Massa's accident several years ago.

Thats not just a guess, thats a considered prognosis given the severity of the accident and his injuries. Less than 10% of people with a serious DAI (diffuse axonal injury) ever regain consciousness, never mind significant meaningful consciousness.

The two things on his side right now are that he is an F1 driver, and modern F1 drivers are some of the fittest people on the planet, and he received very specialist medical intervention extremely quickly. If he makes any kind of recovery, both of those things will have been a significant factor.

I don't know. These guys are some of the most skilled drivers on the planet. They don't just suddenly run out of talent and crash like your average chav in a Vauxhall Corsa.

Formula One cars just cannot cope with significant amounts of standing water or rivers running across the track. Once the car starts to aquaplane then its become a high-speed rudderless boat.

The faster they go, the more downforce and the more they're pushed into the circuit, through the puddles, reducing the chance of aquaplaning. Sounds counterintuitive, but slowing down reduces the grip.

Not an excuse though, he was going far too fast round that corner considering there were double waved yellows. But so was every other driver, they all were.

This is why the FIA need to clamp down on poor flag discipline, and make it a mandatory safety car if there are people and other vehicles on the track, particularly if they are in a run off area recovering a crashed vehicle (as opposed to a strategically stopped retired car well away from the racing line).
