What sort of mileage do you need to think about getting the valve clearances done? What does it entail and could it be done quite easily? If not what sort of price would I be looking at? Cheers

Shim-under-bucket valves. Checking them requires pulling off some bodywork, tank, airbox, ram air tube, coils and rocker cover then rotating the engine and checking the gaps with feeler gauges. If any are out of spec you need to pull the cam tensioner and cams and swap shims. It's quite involved, more so if you have to actually change any of those shims. The interval is 11,000 miles IIRC.

With time and a Haynes manual, you can do it yourself. I managed it with my 40 quid toolbox and machine Mart feelers and torque wrench.

If you have the time to spare, you can do anything.

Purely anecdotally, workmate's spanner monkey[*] didn't want to take his money for doing this on a 25,000 mile CBR600F. Said he'd never seen one that actually needed adjusting and suggesting doing a stethoscope-and-compression check instead.

I stress the 3rd hand nature of that information and that Your Mileage May Literally Vary.

I stopped checking the a while back, every one I ever checked was still in spec at quite high mileages too.

I had an MW CBR600 - last of the carbs IIRC - which had done 30k when I got it. It'd had its valve clearances checked at 11,000 miles according to the paperwork and then nothing since. Checked them, all within tolerance.

It was still ok right up to 40,000 miles ish when I sold it. And it was still ok right up to the point it went flying off into a hedge at 70mph getting totally destroyed.

Do you think it's worth me getting mine checked or not even bother for a while? When I bought it I didn't even bother asking him as I didn't know about them Surprised

They probably should by around 18000 or you're going to be worrying about some self-destruction on any long run.
Chances are it won't need any adjustment - the requirement is to 'check'.

Have it done as part of the next service, ie whilst you've got the thing apart.

I wouldn't go rushing off to do it just now.
