45kph on modern UK roads? Pushbike.

If you must go motorised, I'd lean towards a twist-and-go. It'll make better use of the tiny amount of power available.

Something that you might consider is actually doing tests on it, just to get the clock running on your 2 year "new driver" probationary period. AM is a license category like any other.

Cheapest 2nd hand ped you can find that has almost a years MOT. Run it in to the ground and then just before 17 and the MOT runs out sell it to the next sucker and get a 125 bike.

Get a Kymco scooter off ebay.
Seen them for about £300.
You want a half decent one that will last a year and have a years mot on it.
Seen them with 14k on the clock so they aren't as bad as some of these ones that pack in after 1000 miles like my friend bought for work.
Then shove it back on ebay next year and buy a 125.

^^ Sums it up nicely. You'll only keep it a year, so don't waste too much money on it, and PLEASE don't throw more money down the drain trying to 'de-restrict' it. Save the cash for your first 125.

Ah, good, that'll have set you up well for the motorised version.

Even with lights and an engine, nobody sees you, and if they do, they'll still treat you as a lesser lifeform. You'll have to choose between riding in the gutter, or holding everyone up.

Well, unless you get a 2-stroke and successfully de-restrict it. In which case you are riding otherwise than in accordance with your license (3-6 points) and (probably) using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks (6-8 points). And you'll still be holding most people up.

Sorry to piss on your chips, and it is of course the prerogative of youth to show us duffers how wrong we are. Wink

Then it's not a moped and you can't ride it legally.

I'm not saying you shouldn't, just inform yourself about the relative risks on the road versus at the roadside. Police

South Wales, you'll probably be all right though. Wink

As Rodger said, you can't ride it legally, get stopped by a plod whose having a really bad day and there's a ton of stuff he can do you for. You could well end up having the bike confiscated and crushed because unless the DVLA have been informed that it's been converted into a motorcycle, and it has a motorcycle MOT then it's not road legal whoever rides it.

Also, remember that the build requirements for a moped are a lot lower than for a motorcycle, so a de-restricted moped will almost certainly have inadequate brakes, tyres and suspension.
