Stop saying "ass", it's arse.

Next thing you'll be throwing zeds into words all over the place, going out for a slice of pie, drinking cwaufee, and worse of all, riding one of these:

There's been a serious influx of "ass"'s of late, and it bugs me.

That is all.

Do you really care? I mean , really, really care?

A natural progression of language, speeded up by world interconnectivity. A large part of our language comes from Latin, some from French, much of which also comes from Latin, plus numerous other influences from down the centuries. But you feel free to try to strip it all back to whatever the "origins" might be.

Personally, I couldn't give a rat's...erm...backside. Smile

I like americanisms, I think Us are pointless and just rammed into words where they're not needed, like honour and colour, the U is just needless.

Trash not rubbish, less syllables = more efficient
side walk = makes more sense than pavement

And I approve of supersize mcdonalds (although that doesnt exist here anymore Sad )
Fat people ruin these things. This is why we can't have nice things.

The one that gets on my tits is "hell/heck"... as in "Hell, I could do with another 5 cheeseburgers". My other half spent half her life in America, I make fun of her often and try to teach her geordie slang but it sounds like arse when a yank says owt. Not sure why but I cringe when they say "cunt" as well, it just sounds wrong.

I do sort of care, I probably shouldn't, but it really winds me up.

I catch myself using American slang too, dude being one of my most frequent, but nothing winds me up so much as the word "Ass".

As long as we accept American culture, you stand no chance. If your generation doesn't embrace any of it, then the next will. I have no problems with an Americanised language: some of it seems more expressive than ours, so is useful. You may not like the word "ass", but you know what someone means when they use it. (Perhaps not the best example). I work with people who accuse me of using "fancy" words (I don't have a posh background; far from it!). I just say, well, it's all in the English language, which is there to be used to express what you mean. Every year, the Oxford Dictionary introduces new words into it's much revered publication, and many of those words come from the good 'ol US of A ( Razz ). Others come from technical backgrounds, science etc. English will always be an ever-evolving language.

Although I have been known to go to the "gas station" or the "laundromat" , but that was long before I even became an honorary Cockney.

I never could get the hang of "fewer" and "less".
I think it must be a bit like the offside rule.

Can you just explain it to me in words of one syllable or less, please.
(or is that one syllable or fewer?)

Mad

When typing, ass seems more sensible than arse for some reason, but when I speak with them words out loud I say arse.
