PostPosted: 12:40 - 27 Oct 2014    Post subject: TfL proposal: £12.50 daily charge to ride in London Reply with quote

More detail: TfL is currently consulting on a proposal that, from 2020, all motorbikes over 13 years old at that time (so anything pre-2007) should be charged £12.50 to ride within central London.

The consultation is open here: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/environment/ultra-low-emission-zone

It's likely that everyone's views will be ignored, but still, i've inputted my views and disagreed with every single one regarding motorbikes.

Also left this in the comments:

Quote:
A pre 2007 BMW R1200r already puts out only 95.1g/km CO2 and <0.15g/km NOx, putting it on par with vehicles already considered to be 'ultra-low emissions' by TfL.

Why should I pay £12.50 for my daily commute when i'm riding an Ultra-Low emissions vehicle? For this reason, I strongly object to the proposal as currently outlined with respect to motorbikes. Blanket bans applied to all motorcycles are unfair when there are plenty of pre-2007 motorbikes that are cleaner even than modern cars.

Additionally, as motorcyclists spend the least amount of time stationary in London traffic their contribution to net CO2/NOx pollution is further diminished.

It is my belief that motorcycles should be exempt the proposed charges.

I doubt they give a shit about pollution figures, they just see all the bikes whizzing around and see £££ signs. That and they are jealous the bikes make better progress than their Audi's so they want to tax you off their roads.

Right, so instead of a bike I may as well drive my 1967 Landrover, running on fully leaded petrol, chucking out whatever pollution it feels like, taking twice as long about it, and running as in-efficiently as possible?

Probably moot, by 2020 I doubt you'll even be able to get a motorcycle through London.

Reminds me, it TfL are planning this for 2020 what's the progress of rolling out congestion charges to other large cities?

Bikes are also likely to be more efficient than a car with similar figures as the engine will be running for a lot shorter time for the same distance in most cases.

Just thought as a side note. Will this kill off the vintage runs like the London to Brighton?
Current route takes it through this ULEZ area. 2013 saw 421 starters, list for 2014 is 439. That many in 2020 at £12.50 each would be a nice little earner of over £5400.

I've always wanted a 1974 Ford Falcon ute with the 5.0 V8. If i'm paying £12.50 a day I might as well commute in a decatted beast roasting all the kittens with the sidepipes. Plus the money saved on road tax and mot could go some way to offsetting this ULEZ costs

It's going to happen soon. I've noticed in Manchester every road which goes in and out of the city centre (city centre is subjective! as there are cameras out as far as the a6044).

Meaning the infrastructure is in place already.

Excuse for a 'protest' ride/rally/beers* around parliament square.
What about setting the BMF onto it?

I might write the the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC) Limited. Or what about those dandy chaps at the Bike Shed club, Gentleman's ride and all that.

Most important thing to do at the moment i'd say is spread it amongst motorcyclists and get as many nays as possible on that consultation.

It won't change TfL's mind one jot but it gives good ammo to any motorbike interest groups that might pick up the cause at some point, so they can point to the replies and say '77% of responses to the proposal thought it was cack' or some such.

I get the feeling BCF is a more active motorcycle interest group than any of the proper ones Laughing

Can we send a representative into parliament or something? I vote Ste.

Tut Tut Tut Tut Tut Tut You 're not thinking like a politician. It doesn't make sense to charge bikes £12.50 but it does make sense to put something into the proposals that it makes sense to drop later so they can prove that their surveys were a good idea.

If it comes to that I'm setting the KLE on fire outside TfL headquarters and moving to America.

Yet another reason to avoid London. If it wasn't for the wife wanting to do the tourist thing I'd happily never set foot in the place again.

The worrying thing is, I heard today that they're on about forming TftN (Transport for the North) now that somebody has suggested HS3. Does this mean that I'll get bummed in the gob for the audacity of owning a motor vehicle as a peasant?
