You've seen these "no key" systems where the vehicle can sense the fact that you have the key fob with you, and you can start the vehicle with a button. I think this has been applied to one or two bikes, but is there a commercially available system that enables the use of a motorbike without the key/fob being removed from your jacket pocket ?

Yes, GTR 1400 has got it, it also lets you open the panniers and other storage spaces just because the key is near the bike. I think it's stupid.

The thing that looks like the key in the ignition box is in fact a switch. The switch stays there and if the actual key is close enough, you just use the switch to turn the power on, and so on.

The only bikes I can think of from the top of my head that have it are the Ducati Multistrada and Diavel. The cost of making it work, wiring it into the loom, putting in a security system in case you lose the key, the RF units... Not worth it. In fact with the cost of doing it properly, you're as well using that money to put a deposit on a Diavel.

Overly complex for a bike, but I do kind of like the idea of having the key tucked away in a pocket with no need to fiddle about finding it and trying to find the slot in the dark.

Everything electronic is overly complex for a bike IMO!

Some types of big comfy well specced mile munchers might benefit from ABS, and an electric reverse system, power operated screen, and integrated sat nav and stereo, but once upon a time bikes were light and fast and didn't need any complicated shit!

I'd rather have a set of £2000 Ohlins forks, with race sped high/low speed adjustable compression/damping etc, than £2000 worth of electronic rider aids, or fly by wire bollocks etc.

Car's used to be fast simple and fun too! You don't see any like this in the showrooms today though!

I met a guy at a rat rally once who had put magnets inside the palm of his left glove and a bimetalic strip inside the left handlebar. Bike wouldnt start unless you were wearing those gloves.

Seems like a much cheaper way than pissing around with RFID readers too, and just as secure so long as you dont brag to scrotes about it.

My SR500 didn't have a key, just a killswitch on the handlebars. I always figured if someone was able to start it, they deserved it.

The less electronics on bikes the better. I hate how they keep adding electronics to cars and bikes. It's just another thing to go wrong.

Got to agree with you Monkeybiker. What is even worse is having computer processors to manage everything electrical on the bikes/cars. We all know about computer crashes which are bad enough sat at a desk but on a bike, out on the road! Shocked give me some good old mechanical engineering where you can see what's wrong. Wink

One of the blokes on the ZZR international forum has no key on the bike and has remote start.

He also has something in his left boot and on the bike near the foot peg so you can't put it in gear unless you're wearing those boots - or something along those lines.

You can get cat flaps that recognise your cat if it's chipped, you could use use one of these in the seat and get your bollocks chipped.

The RSPCA do it for free on Sundays make sure you Queue for chipping not neutering..............

BMW have a keyless ride optional extra they're offering on their bikes from 2015, but that's the only one I know of.

aside from my kawasaki which has a barrel so worn you can start it with a spoon.

slight tangent but related - someone I knew had an remote operation garage door - apparently had the chip/transmitter thingo wired into his high beam pass switch so he could just flash his lights at the garage door. Seemed sensible.

My friends ducati diavel is keyless, as long as the fob is in your pocket it will start, although you still need the key that folds into the fob for the fuel cap so we both said we don't see the point?

think it was designed to warm bike up whilst getting ready

got used to scare paperboy postman ect ect

it also had a habit of leaving the ingnition live so couldnt start it in the morning after a night shift

Why overly complex for a bike but not a car?both are means of transport. Who says a bike should be less complex than a car?

I'm not fond of no-key systems due to the due to the parasitic drain on the battery.

Jinlun cruisers came with that for a while as well, indicating that the wholesale cost is likely a couple of Yuan.

Any remote system must be constantly powered at the bike end, so I'd avoid it purely on that basis.

A simple hidden switch somewhere on the bike would be my ghetto bodge of choice.

Most of the big hardly's have them. i like the idea of it, however i am always a little cautious. some of the cars can be started with the key, then you can be dragged out of it, key in pocket, and they can still drive off without it.
