What's the best way to convert?

I currently have two policies and three bikes, one SORNed. It was cheaper for two different bikes when I started out, and the scooter I commute on is now insured FC, since I park it up in central London. But now I want three bikes on the go.

So now I have policies that have different renewal dates, and two sets of NCD, but of course if I have an at-fault accident I'll lose both sets. So without it being cheaper, there's no upside.

Is it generally possible to convert an existing single bike policy to multi-bike, if the insurer also does multi-bike policies? (I'm doubting this, since it depends on the underwriter.)

Or should I switch over when next insurance renewal time comes around?

There also doesn't seem to be quote comparison sites for multi-bike, it looks like you need to do a quote on each individual broker's site separately, or spend some quality time on the phone. What's the best way of shopping around?

I've gone from a single to multi without any issue when I had the SV650, I spoke to my provider, I think they changed the underwriter but I'm not sure, whatever they did my level of cover was unchanged, I just bunged them an extra £50 and away I went.

That is useful, I'll check out a couple of representative quotes, then ring up my current insurers and see what each can do.

I know with Admiral multicar you take out the policy on the first car for a full 12 months, say 1/4/2014 - 1/4/2015.
When the 2nd cars current policy runs out it is covered for the remainder of the years policy (x/y/2014 - 1/4/2015) and so on with additional cars.

Then come 1/4/2015 all the cars will renew for a full 12 months, and thereafter until you cancel the multicar policy.

You have to add all the cars at the start of that first policy, because the price you pay depends on all the cars you insure and the factors of the policy etc, but they only become "active" part-way through the year as the old insurance expires.

I would imagine other multicar and multibike policies are similar.

My experience with Carole Nash was always positive with respect to multi bikes but then they went VERY expensive so I changed to the dreaded MCE! Laughing

They were much cheaper BUT, and it's a big but, they are not cheap to change out of renewal time so make sure you get it right and put all the bikes on at one time. Also don't expect much money back if you take a bike off. I had 3 bikes, Trophy, Explorer and Fazer on my multibike. Over 6 months left and when I sold the Explorer I got the princely total of £26 odd back.

Saying all that, they are pretty cheap, for the 3 above bikes, fully comp a tad over £200 although I am an old fart!

Edit - actually looking at it, £26 probably isn't so bad. Half the policy left to go, 3 bikes and about an 8th of the premium back.
