I understand almost everyone takes this out. It covers your legal costs up to £100k in the event of a non-fault accident.

Aren't there a 10 million accident management firms who will take your case on via no win/no fee?

I aim to get the least amount of cover, you are unlikely to lose unless you ride like a total wanker and smash into a school bus at over 100mph in a 30.

Back when I was 17, I rode a 125 on L plates and a taxi driver knocked me off. The case was relatively clear cut, that the taxi was at fault, however my insurer (Swinton), had no success in getting a response from the insurance company of the taxi driver. I happened to have legal cover on my policy, and this was what allowed Swinton to threaten the other insurer with a court case. I was told by Swinton, that it is only possible to do this if the policy has legal cover, so that they can follow the threat through if the insurer still ignores their correspondence.

The threat alone was enough to make the other insurer cave in and I got a payout in the end, but I make sure that every insurance policy I have now has legal cover. 30 quid is alot but spread across 12 months is a couple of quid a month, and for peace of mind probably worth it.

I had legal cover when I had a bike 'crash' about 11 years ago... A car pulled out over a give-way line and drove into the side of me because the car behind me flashed her out

The legal cover appointed solicitor who would 'work tirelessly on my behalf' was a cunt who dithered for about 18 months, then quit.

His replacement was worse.

Quote:
If you weren't on a bike it wouldn't have happened

When I argued that it was not my fault at all, the replacement cunt said

Quote:
If you refuse to follow my advice to accept 50% liability we will no longer be able to represent you and will bill you for all services

All services turned out to total around £12,000... It seems that 50 quid per letter (some I had 4 or 5 identical copies dated the same that were to be charged individually) and 50 quid per phone call (I'm sorry, she isn't in the office right now, call back later) adds up very quickly.

It took them nearly 3 years to royally fuck me over.

There's a damn good reason that they are called 'solicitors' and prostitutes 'solicit'.....

Not since nor ever again will I have legal cover.

That's bollocks, you can pursue a court case yourself.

Not an expert, but with qualified one-way cost shifting, you can end up with nothing or even owing money if you go to court (something I'm currently facing). So yeah I'll be taking it out in future Smile

Please educate as I'm about to sue my former employer with a solicitor firm using a CFA (no win no fee).

Did someone trying to sell it to you for £30 tell you this?

It's oft' been shown that people will value a item or service more if they pay for it or get free.

So 'legal cover' seems to be an excellent way for companies to not only sell your claim to a claims management company, but to get you you to pay them to restrict your choice in claims management companies to the ones they give back handers to.

nah, I don't take any extras

though I just now insured a bike, and spent ages dithering between third party only, and third party fire an theft. Ages, almost half of episode one, series 3, Borgia,

but apart from getting slightly more than the bare bones 3po insurance, I never take the extras.

Apparently that's no longer allowed.

referral fees have been banned since April 2013, hence the reasons so many insurers have now purchased law firms about to go out of business so that they can deal in house, hence the reason why so many are rubbish, simply because they are unable to charge the normal Law Society rate.

LEI is one of the biggest cons out there.

Go to Stockport where one of the biggest LEI law firms are based. Each fee earner is allowed 1 unit (6 minutes) per day on a file.

I don't need it, many many nice men and nice ladies ring me up frequently about my recent motor vehicle accident.

I've never actually had one of these, but it's nice to know that they keep checking and come the day it does finally happen, I will be able to save the price of that first phone call just by waiting for about half a day. It'll be nice not having to tell them to piss off for a change as well.

Not sure about workplace 'stuff'. I know to take an employer to tribunal costs £1500 (unless your a member of a trade union), and based on what happened to a former colleague, even if you have a pretty strong case they tend to side with the company.

This would be in court related to employer liability and personal injury (unless they settle). I'll be honest I'm so whacked out on Tramadol and other meds these days I can barely understand the legal mumbo jumbo in the paperwork. Just wondered if you knew some common pitfalls so I can check I'm not about to be dry bummed.

You don't need to lose now. With the current rules, if the other side makes an offer, you go to court and are awarded less then you lose (as your liable for the other sides costs). That's where legal cover comes in, as you wouldn't be personally liable.

Read what arry put, if an insurer says that you don't buy it, you don't buy it Wink

I've never been to court through an insurance claim. I protest to be innocent, I've never needed to go to court, even when it involved putting me in a coma, the driver being uninsured and driving away.

Then again, I hassle my insurers daily to resolve my claim, so the other side must get pissed off fast and cave in.

TPO with no extras.

Insurance company must to collect much, much more than to pay off to make any profit for themselves.

Just the basic idea of this business stops me from giving them any extra cash.

One time, I pointed out a misinterpretation of the helmet regs, one time. Rolling Eyes

On topic, no, I don't pay £30 a whack on four motor insurance policies to get LEI just for motor claims, because I have general purpose LEI via my work benefits. If it didn't, I'd add it, once, to my home insurance, after checking carefully that motor claims are not excluded.

I have FC ins and that means that the Ins co has to deal... They try to worm their way out and its straight to FOS after they have failed to resolve the complaint in the 8 weeks they have.

Never taken out legal ins ever since I got conned and found that the broker selling it, was using his son as the legal co..... Ended nasty for the family as they got caught.....

Never had legal cover since a taxi passenger opened a door on me and caved in my front wing.
Took almost a year to 'resolve' the situation, we got less than 50% of the repair bill.
Not worth a w*nk. Thumbs Down

Karma thanks. I think shouldn't matter to me as I'm in no way a defendant and a mangled spine can't be called fundamentally dishonest.

So does the legal insurance offer anything better than you would receive going to a CFA accident management company?

Is it within the capabilities of a normal person to write some legal letters themselves (templates must be around on the net)?

How does this work in a mixed-fault accident?
