Just watched the BBC news and the reporting on the withdrawal from Afghanistan. A lot of slop about getting "the job done" some heart warming footage of girls going to school etc. Nothing about the politics behind being there or the real reason we went there. To back up the US in chasing down Al Quida and to punish the Taliban for giving them a base. So ok bumbling along behind the US is pretty shite but chasing down Al Quida and giving a regime that gave them sanctuary is all reasonable given the harm a terrorist organisation can do. So why be so coy about it all and have to dress up the war as some kind of humanitarian mission?

Because if you remember the lies 14 years ago. There was supposed to be a gigantic Al Quada command bunker.

British and American forces found absolutely no such thing. So rather than admitting they were wrong they re-wrote history and said no no it was a humanitarian mission. In effect Afghanistan is the 2nd war which in which the objectives at the outset were not met.

Back in the old days not meeting your objectives and having to leave was called a defeat. We can't have the British army being defeated can it?

Look back to Vietnam for parallels, the US military was effectively routed and defeated in Vietnam. But they dress it up as a withdrawl because being a bunch of blokes with Ak47s is absolute humiliation.

Oh im sure there was all sorts of bolloks to justify invasion and an obsessive US hell bent on vengeance was folly to follow just it fucking annoys me how the BBC go so balls deep on the "human story" shite.

Actually I think the current situation in northern Iraq probably has more parallels with the US in Vietnam. Going in to support a friendly regime in its war against an insurgancy in the north, rings more than a few bells.

Thread title and content appear tenuously related at best. Politics and reasons are for another thread. Can we not be happy with finally getting out.

Watching the last man pulling down the union flag in a British manned Afghan fort reminded me of the Flashman books.

What a waste of 400+ lives.

Give it 6 months and the Taliban/Isis will be ruling there so what did we accomplish? The sum total of F all.

The PRC government thanks NATO for their actions.

As China got most of the mineral rights in Afghanistan (as they did in Iraq) in the aftermath.

FTFY

. . . "'Then Lieutenant Flashman was found, wounded and unconscious, by the ruins of the gate, where he had taken his final stand in defence not only of the fort, but of his country's honour. For he was found, in the last extremity, with the colours clutched to his broken body, his face to the foemen, defiant even unto death'" . . .

Or

"Fuck this for a game of soldiers"! H.P.F.
