My old workhorse, '94 ZZR1100 D2, 45K, appears to have developed a new noise that I'm finding hard to pin down. Not plugging something in my ears whilst I ride does mean that I can pick up on nasty noises developing rather than when they become terminal or affect performance, so we aren't talking about a proper racket!

The air intake systems on these are always noisy and it sounds like a more magnified version of that, like a whirring sound but coming from what sounds like the top end. I'm away from the workshop for a while and lacking in tools so my diagnostics are limited to 'oh shit, I hope it gets me back to Devon'! Wink

It's more noticeable at idle (but that could be because the air intakes are noisier at higher revs and road noise doesn't help). No problems running, everything else seems normal.

Things it's not:
CCT
Valves
Piston slap
Exhaust headers
Big ends
Little ends
Rings
Low oil/coolant/lack of servicing
Also sounds as though it's too high up the lump for the dreaded clutch/ starter chain tensioner problem that these beasts suffer from

The only thing I can think is that the Camshaft /bearers have had a disagreement. Does anyone know if the Zed 1100's are prone to dry camshafts? I can't find anything by trawling google, etc.

Thoughts anyone?

Very true, although access is somewhat limited by the bodywork. If the weather brightens up a bit I'll probably find a strip of something in my brother's 'workshop' to use.

I was aware of the problems with the early model 1200's and there are references on the net to slight pitting problems on the 1100 shafts.

Sounds like I'll have to get the tank off and have a better listen. Bit of a bugger if it's a bent shaft as these are shell-less types and bear directly on the head!!

It was an issue for a lot of bikes with that engine and related lumps.

The cams on my gpz1100s (zx11e) were replaced due to wear of the cam lobes, apparently Kawasaki were cheaping out on the hard chroming. The gpz 11 uses basically the same engine but with the older gpz900 style side draught head.
