MPs destroy expense claims for period before 2010 as a result there is now insufficient evidence to weed out bogus claims.

How incredibly convenient!

HMRC demands your tax records and receipts are kept for 7 years. I still have my 2008 records.

What's actually involved with being an MP? Get yourself voted in then wing it? Tempted to have a go Schwarzenegger style. I'll do my few years for free. Anything to get rid of the local career politician Thumbs Up .

That's it, of course the main parties have the media and 1000s of Eastern Europeans to carpet bomb the local area with leaflets and the local radio and TV will give them airtime.

Sounds promising and worth a go. But what happens if you actually win? Then what? Is there on the job training or something? Do I just sit at a desk and people ask me to make decisions? I'll have a look at how many votes lead to a win in the most recent elections.

Unless, of course, you want to keep your job for longer than one period; in which case I would suggest the answer is "pander to whatever you think the biggest part of the voting population wants"!

They don't even have to do that. I live in a Rock solid labour seat, put a labour rosette on a park bench and people will vote for it.

As above nothing.

There are certain carrots however. If you do two terms you get a really good pension far better than anything you could get anywhere else.

If you attend Parliament you can claim travel expenses even lie about them and get them back no questions asked. You also get £25K (tax free) attendance allowance for going to Parliament.

The HoC has a uber subsidised bar and canteen where meals we wouldn't get change out of £100 are charged at super cheap rates.

You can put anything under £20 no questions asked onto expenses no receipts needed.


What normally happens is this:

The MP rents a constituency office, usually off a relative or a close mate. The rent is substantially higher than the market rate.

The MP then hires family to be constituency office staff under shady job titles. You can pay them whatever you want and they don't actually have to be there. Nadine Dorries for example hired her daughters to be office managers on £45,000/£35,000. She lived 96 miles away and was a student.

You then spend your time buying as much as possible for £19.99.

If you want to be greedy then you simply go to Parliament and vote AGAINST your party. MPs who vote against their party aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it because the government will often bribe them to vote with the government. The bribes are often in the form of all expenses holidays to somewhere exotic like Jamaica but are dressed up as 'fact finding missions'.

We were discussing a non-affiliated new independent MP I believe - for which the situation is rather different.

There are plenty of easier to get jobs which are much less hassle where you can claim a lot on expenses without question and with massively lower scrutiny.

A relatively low level sales person at a company I used to work for was boasting about his £125k pay while wondering where he could get (more, I would guess) coke and (presume the first for the night) hookers. He paid for the taxi which he was claiming back and asked for the driver to double the fee on the receipt.

I suspect what people like J Clarkson get away with would pail the government into insignificance.

The point is that you could draw an MP's salary while also scamming away in a "day" job. There is no power of recall - even the recently touted bill requires a criminal conviction, or Parliament (i.e. the other piggies) to suspend an MP first.

Was i just naive when i was young or his there just more and more cases over the government screwing us and protecting themselves blatantly.

There should be some sort of expenses card for the feckers where the people get to agree the limits, feckers it truly is one rule for them and us.

I have never felt so much like its a time bomb waiting for people to say enough is enough and drag the feckers out.

Yes Stevie GooGs, very naive. I expect there's less overall.

And yes, it's very much one rule for them and another for us.
Compare to someone with similar responsibilities in the 'real world', they'll likely get massively less money, less expenses and a lot more hassle in justifying their expenses.
Do you want the MPs running our country to be having to continually work out if they can afford a taxi so they can do some work on the way to work, or get the tube?

The less financial recompense they get, the more you narrow the position to people that are already rich in the first place. Of course, being able to make money does suggest some skills which should be useful in their job.

No they don't, as Itchy quite rightly says, if you are incumbent in a 'safe' seat, you can pretty much do what you like as long as you don't do anything to cause your party to deselect you.
