So, because Im a wanker Ive cocked everything up.

I noticed the chain is skipping a little. Give it a poke and its VERY loose. Its pissing down with rain, just got off a 14 hour shift and I CBA to do anything about it, will do it after work the next day because the forecast is a bit nicer! I limp it to the work, just about making it there. Park it up and think I'll sort it later, its a 2 minute job and Ill borrow the spanners from the workshop guys when my shift is over.

My shift finishes at 6pm, the workshop guys go home at 5pm. Cock. Typically nobody on the station has even a basic toolkit. With no other option I try and limp it home. Get about half a mile down the road and the chain ties itself in a knot around the rear sprocket.

Removing the sprocket cover reveals this... something seems to be missing. Chiefly the front sprocket! Fucked if I know where its gone!

So Ive ordered a chain & sprocket kit, but then realised it didnt say wether it included fittings or not...

The only bit left behind was this

https://i59.tinypic.com/2gvlwd5.png

Dunno what its called, but from what I gather its the bit that holds the sprocket onto the shaft, and it needs 2 bolts to join to the sprocket which I dont have and dont know if the kit will come with.

So question for those out there wiser than me, whats the chances of the kit coming with bolts? If not any idea what size bolts I need? Can I bodge it with any bolt that fits the hole and holds it in place? Finally and most importantly, does anything in those pics look fucked? I dont know what it looked like before hand so dont know if Im missing anything thats supposed to be there (other than the sprocket!) or if theres anything else broken? Embarassed

Lesson learnt here: Do your weekly checks and tighten the damn chain! Evil or Very Mad If I hadnt been such a lazy wanker this probably wouldnt have happened!

When you do fit a new one use thread lock. Quite possible the bolts have wobbled out.

That site doesnt seem to like me! Sad Says invalid access code!

If Im just missing two bolts then hopefully it shouldnt be too much of a drama to fit... thankfully its a split pin chain too rather than riveted so can try and get it all done if it ever stops bloody raining for half an hour.

ah thats superbly helpful, nice exploded diagrams too. Yep looks like all I need then are those 2 bolts! hopefully new sprocket will come with them, if not I cant imagine them being too hard to get hold of.

You should try and get the bolts separately. Very unlikely to come with the sprocket.

Kit turned up today, bloody fast that was!

Bolts didnt come with it, nor a new sprocket retainer (not that I needed one thankfully) but its pretty annoying, when something is listed as "full sprocket kit!" Id expect it to have everything you need, oh well.

Looks like a fairly easy job to do, now just need the bolts and a few hours of it not raining! God I miss having a garage!

To be fair to them, If it comes with 2 sprockets, it is a "Full sprocket kit" if it had said "Full Sprocket kit + Fittings" you would have a point Smile

Seriously tho, like Monkey said, threadlock is your friend!

P.S. how much was the bill to clean the brown off the seat?

As said, the retaining plate and bolts are not servicable items and aren't expected to be replaced when the chain and sprocket are replaced or if say, someone is unable to maintain they're vehicle and so bits start fucking off, i'm surprised that you managed to find the retainer. just put 2 cap head bolts and some red loctite on it?

I laughed at that far harder than I should of Embarassed Sad thing is Im more than capable of maintaining it, I just got lazy. Still, lesson learnt and at least it didnt decide to go on a dual carriageway ay 60 or something.

The retainer was just happily sitting on the very edge of the shaft when I took the sprocket cover off, how it didnt vanish as well Ill never know.

All done, took it out for a test ride and didnt die so Im assuming its all good.

Mildly concerned about the chain tensioner because the left one got a bit mangled in the chain when it came off, its bodged for now and on the basis that the new chain is tight as fuck it doesnt need adjusting but Ill order a new one and get it done sooner rather than later.
Chain has about 20mm of play with me sat on it, which seems a good amount according to the instructions.

I wish I had a torque wrench though, had to settle for doing up the bolts as tight as I could and hope for the best. Will check on them in a day or two just to make sure nothings wobbling its way loose again. Need to invest in some threadlock too.
