Howdy all,

Im soon going to be in possession of a fully standard SV650 as my first big bike. I have been reading around and most commonly people change the can on it as its very quiet.

I was wondering what simple mods people do on their bikes? Be it drilling out baffles or even adding stickers Laughing (according to my insurance company, stickers are 'mods') Rolling Eyes

Im no mechanic so simple means either hitting it with a hammer or using a drill Mr. Green

Badly spray it with rattle cans

Add pointless stickers that look stupid

Add a headlight bulb that blinds the hell out of anyone oncoming

Add pointless LED's

Add a 12V power socket (this one is actually useful)

Add rimtape

All the above are common mods to bikes (and I'm guilty of them all).

Not yet but I did just order a really ugly looking front m/c that has a extra tacky anodised lid (was cheaper than a rebuild kit for the OEM one).

They aren't amazing bikes; lack lusture suspenion, brakes and a particularly boring engine.

So there's plenty you can do.

To generally improve performance (and riding faster will of course make girls go weak at their knees etc); handling, power delivery and braking...
By far and away the best thing you can do to it for a good while is...
Add fuel.
Ride.

Gently abrade plastics, engine cases, bar ends and other non essential parts to reduce weight. This is commonly done by sliding down the road. Make sure you do both sides or it will handle funny.

Leave it as it is if it is truly a bog standard SV (or any bike for that matter) they're increasingly hard to come by, and invariably worth more as standard.

The only SV650 mod I can think of is getting a different bike. Thumbs Up

Only mods worth doing in my opinion are...

-Heated grips
-Braided lines (+ EBC HH pads make a bit of a positive difference if your brakes are as bad as the Bandit)
-Aftermarket End Can/Exhaust (a mate has 200mm Delkevic on his SV & it sounds alright)
-Tail Tidy
-Crash Bungs

Other mod's I probably wouldn't do myself but you may want to:

-Double bubble screen (MTFU)
-12v socket (charge phone etc', although I just use a battery pack)
-Adjustable levers (levers sometimes snap when you drop the bike, but they're cheap to replace anyway. Where as ASV levers cost a bomb)

Scottoiler (not done it)
Super sexy top-box (did due to carrying shopping and stuff)
Super sexy front mud guard extender. Limits the crap thrown over the front exhaust header and cylinder. Cuts down on rust and should stop the SV650 becoming SV325 is the rain.

As others have said, 12v adaptor is useful.

You can fit a 4 way LED fusebox under the rear seat.
I've got a 12v adaptor + twin USB port attached. As well as an Optimate lead for easy charging access.

A previous owner stuck a rubber pipe on the front carb vacuum take-off. Making balancing carbs a doddle.
If you ever have to remove the front rad, you should definitely consider adding this pipe (with a bung in the end).

Be wary of the 225mm Delkevic can, it's loud, might be too much of a jump from standard (it is for me.....and my neighbours at 1am).

+2 rear sprocket for a small increase in acceleration.

I'm thinking of getting braided brake lines as the fronts could do with some help!

Headlight could do with a bump too.

Front progressive springs (with associated oil) and rear shock upgrade, you can do it on the cheap with a ZX6 shock or do the job properly with a race shock.

On the curvy, the 2004 ZX10 shock appears to be good. Firmer spring, tiny bit higher ride height, not to mention being fully adjustable. Finding a good one for reasonable money is the main issue.

Leave it in a ditch on fire somewhere and buy a cbr600

Thats the only mod I can think of that would be of any use tbh.

fit a front sprocket at least 2 teeth smaller, probably the only thing that will make riding it interesting

Change all standard bolts, washers etc. to stainless.
Chopping the standard exhaust in half will make it sound nice.
Cover the engine regularly in a protector like GT-85.
Upgrade front forks with springs and oil.
Keep an eye on the lower yoke, it has tendency to pitting. I had mine replaced.
Heated grips.
Keep original round headlamp, don't switch it for twins. It looks dodgy (mine did).

The Oracle speaketh the truth!

InquisitionChris, don't worry about the anti-SV sentiment. These people are just intensely envious of our plucky, agricultural steads. Very Happy

As G said, enjoy riding the thing before worrying about setting to it with a hammer + drill (this will happen).

I went down to visit my parents new place yesterday and came back today. On both occasions, going along the A29 and up/down Bury Hill.
Took the SV and really enjoyed it. You have to plan ahead a little more, work the engine and gears to keep it hustling along, but it's all good fun.
I'd like to partially retract my dislike of the Delkevic 225mm can. Yes around town it sounds like a cross between a Harley and a Sierra with a blown exhaust. But when out in the sticks, giving it the beans, sounds amazing Smile

Enjoy your new bike!
