So yesterday I popped a TDK MA-XG90 of Marillion's "Script for a Jester's Tear" into my achingly cool Sony FH mini system and had a listen. And although I was never a big prog rock fan, I have to say that it's stood the test of time remarkably well. Fish could sing. The band could play. Over thirty years gone by and it still gets your attention.

What albums have you been listening to that stand the test of time? This is one for BCF's old farts of the 1980s and earlier - nothing later than 31 December 1989!

I loved "Script" when I was a teenager, and it still has a place on my iphone now, but some of the lyrics have move from "inspired poetry" to "cheesy angst" as I've aged.

Albums that have stood the test of time that haven't been mentioned already...

Faith No More - The Real Thing
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
The Wildhearts - Earth Vs The Wildhearts

I feel ashamed with myself for not mentioning these. But then there are many many more I could list and spend all night thinking of.

Toxicity is very good, but being a 21st century album, it's not really stood the test of time yet I don't think.

20 years at least I think before it counts. Ideally 25 or more

If we're being honest, barely any of the albums mentioned above have stood the test of time. Marillion being one of the more obvious.

A useful test is to try to imagine what it would feel like to listen to if it had never been released in the first place, and instead only came out last week. It would be laughed out of court.

Script for a Jester's Tear would fare particularly badly, for several reasons. Firstly we would hear very dated synth sounds - these alone are enough to prevent it from standing the test of time. But add in the fact that it's aping an extremely dated style of '70s rock - i.e. prog, more specifically Genesis - that was very much of its time and unlike other styles from that era e.g. punk and disco (which have pretty much been with us ever since in one form or other) - was consigned to the lumber room of musical history many decades ago, you are left with an album that belongs only in the past. The overly complicated arrangements, too-slick production style (e.g. painfully '80s drums sounds with the gated snare, close mic'd, digital reverb). The stupidly fiddly time signatures. I really would be hard pushed to think of a record from the '80s that has stood the test of time less well.

Let's just pick some other nominations at random now. Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair, e.g. Wow - again, it's hard to think of an album that sounds more '80s. Even the first 10 seconds of that record have that all too familiar '80s drum machine style that instantly dates it to a specific era, thus making it that much harder to 'stand the test of time.' It's true that someone like Gary Jules could cover Mad World and make it timeless - but to do so he had to strip it down to almost nothing, i.e. just piano and vocal.

Most pop doesn't and can't stand the test of time because 99% of it uses sounds and production styles that were cutting edge then, but which now just sound old and - often - a bit embarrassing. Anything with synths or electronically generated sounds is more likely to suffer than those without. So for example an album like Nick Drake's Pink Moon could've been released decades before or decades after and wouldn't sound out of place. It's much more difficult for one voice and an acoustic guitar to be identified with a particular decade. Compare this with a track that's self-consciously attempting to sound cutting edge and up-to-date like most pop does - by using the latest drum machines and synth sounds - and you've got a recipe for built in obsolescence that's going to massively hinder its chances of standing the test of time.

Even Faith No More fail here - their use of synths, and the kinds of synth sounds they use, immediately place them in the '80s. And I'm not even going to mention that cheesy slap bass shit.

By all means listen to your cumbly old crap that sounds horrifically dated, but don't kid yourselves that it's anything other than stuff that meant something to you at the time. It's not special beyond this. It's certainly not so awesome that it stands apart in a unique void protected from the ravages of time and space. Quite the opposite - its your Dorian Grey portrait, haggard, saggy beer breasted and baggy bleary eyed - decaying quietly while you try to convince the kids that your old tapes still have some relevance.

I should know. It happens to me on a daily basis in our house. Mr. Green

A lot of the Queen stuff would still cut the mustard.

A Kind of Magic as a specific album but they all have excellent stuff on them.

You're kidding?? That's horrendous! There is no worse music in existence. It's "rock" music for people who can't just come out of the pop closet and enjoy Abba like they should do.

Stupendously terrible album that sounds like the very worst of the '80s.

Also, Human league:

Oh quacker. My dear quacker. I'll give you the first on the basis of music's most barmy barnet. But that's the best I can possibly do.

As for Human League, they were ace - no doubt. But all their singles have permeated our very brains and faces to such an extent that they fall on us like drizzle these days. I think the slightly later, understated singles - particularly Louise - have weathered the best. I love that one.

By "standing the test of time" I didn't mean "would sell now because it's so obviously ace and timeless innit".

I was thinking more of the 80/20 rule and that most of the albums in any era are dross. Some will stand repeated listening for those people who were around at the time.

Accepted, Fish-era Marillion's music was always a minority taste, but for the kind of music they did, Script For a Jester's Tear was an exemplar.

Shaft mentioned Ultravox's Vienna - again, never going to be popular today, but a great example of early 80s synth-pop.

Other artists had less staying power - e.g. the jolly nice but otherwise anonymous Nik Kershaw or Banarama - and they are now all but forgotten. Well, they still get airplay, but there's not much artistic merit there is there. (Apologies if you're a big Nik Kershaw fan Trevor.)

Ultravox do have some great songs - but they're all pre-Ure. Hiroshima Mon Amour off Ha Ha Ha is definitely worth a mention here - taking a leaf out of Bowie's Low i.e. "Berlin" phase.

Can't really remember any nik kershaw tbh - was he in kajagoogoo?? Something about old men in stripy trousers, was it??
