Ok, so I've bought a bike from a dealer that's currently on a private plate. The plate isn't included in the sale so it's currently been put on retention. I've paid the dealer a couple of days ago and they've started the ball rolling. I was under the impression this would be sorted within a couple of days and I'd be able to go in and sign documents and arrange delivery. I rang today and was just told they're still waiting for the documents back reverting the bike to it's original plates and they'll give me a ring when its done.

Is this the normal way to do these things as I've never had anything to do with private plates before?

There's no hurry for me to take the bike but I'm a bit pissed off that after paying the full amount I'm told it could take a couple of weeks. Shouldn't they have done this before the bike was sold anyway? Question

Putting the reg on hold can be a bit of a faff and not a speedy process I'm afraid.

Poor show on the dealers part from taking full payment and making you wait an age before they give you the bike.

I'm thinking that if the private reg wasn't included in the sale (which I was fully aware of) then why didn't they put it on retention as soon as they took it in as a part ex??

So once they get documents back regarding the new reg, what happens with the log book? Do I get the new keepers supplement from the V5 under the private plate and the new one with original plate comes in post?

DVLA can take up to 14 days to deal with retentions. Then another 14 days to send a new V5C through. Bear in mind also that to retain the plate they'll need to be the registered keeper. So unless they're doing it on behalf of the previous owner, you might find the V5C comes back with an extra keeper.

It's a bit poor for them to wait until they sell the bike, then start messing about with retentions.

As far as I know they're doing it for the previous owner who is buying a bike from them so surely this should have been done when they got the bike!

So I could have a four week wait before they can deliver the bike?? Thats totally out of order when I've paid in full. I was told by the dealer it would be "a couple of days".

I've done it a few times and it's never taken more than a week, so be patient. That said, if they'd nipped to the local DVLA office they could've done it in person in about 10 minutes.

So have I got this right?

They've sent off relevant documents and hopefully sooner rather than later they'll get back the retention certificate and authorisation for original plate to go back on.

But then I've also got to wait for them to receive the new V5 from which, I'll get the new keeper's supplement until a further V5 comes to me.

What a fucking ball ache, if I'd known it was going to be this much of a fuck on, I'd have bought a different bike!

The local offices are disappearing at warp speed and most cherished transfers and retentions are now done by post to Swansea. It does depend what that dealer's local arrangements with DVLA are.

Last time I did a cherished transfer I got the paperwork back in about 10 days, and the V5C about a week after that.

The saving grace for you will be if they let you take the bike before the V5C comes back, but it will be a few weeks before you can get it registered to yourself. Hopefully you'll be able to tax it online, as long as their systems update quickly enough.

I've just transferred my plate off the car in preparation for sale. The new log book with the car's original plate came back in about a week. The retention document was a couple of days later.

There is something to be aware of which caused me loads of hassle last year - you can't transfer a plate off a vehicle that's "in trade". Hopefully the bike you're buying is still registered in someone's name and hasn't been transferred over into trade in the dealer's name.

I traded in a car with my plate on it as the garage said they'd pay for and complete the plate transfer to the new vehicle. However, the garage made a cock-up and sent off their part of the V5 to transfer the traded vehicle "into trade" before doing the plate transfer. This is a major problem as you can't transfer a plate off a vehicle that is "in trade". They had to await the new V5 in trade, transfer the car back to my name and out of trade, await the new V5 in my name, perform the plate transfer and finally transfer the car back into trade so they could sell it. The whole process took about 12 weeks to get sorted.

Yeah paying in full was a bad move in hindsight, but the dealer was waiting for the money before doing anything and assured me it would all be sorted in a day or two.

Now as it stands they have the bike and the money and I'm just told we'll ring you when its sorted. I can't even go in to sign any documents as everything's under the private plate.

Is it even possible that I go to the dealer and they're like "what money/bike" ?

We would certainly have a bit of concern, then again I tend to be very impatient. When I buy something I want it there and then, so by this stage I would have gone for my money back and pissed off somewhere else.
Based on the fact that they said couple of days and they've been earning interest on MY MONEY etc and so on.

You sir are certainly more patient than me

I think I may pay them a visit tomorrow and get some sort of interim receipt.

If they did try anything funny, would my bank statement showing the transfer act as proof?

Your bank will proof a transfer to the dealer's account yes.
I would still get at least a receipt

Uh... are you saying that you just handed over a wodge of money in return for a handshake and a promise? From a dealer? Laughing

Chin up, it'll probably be OK, and hopefully a lesson earned and learned.

I know, I've been stupid. I sent the bank transfer expecting to go in within a couple of days to sort everything out. Then all this bollocks with the plate happens so as far as they're concerned there's no reason for me to go in yet.

I'm going to ring them in the morning to see if there's any progress and I'll tell them I'll be in to pick up a receipt.
