Argh, this crappy winter hack is more hassle than it's worth!

GS500 is getting 17volts from the regulator rectifier. This is the 2nd one to do this in 18 month.

Anyone know of a MOSFET R/R that'll fit to this? Don't mind paying a premium for it. This R/R I thought was a decent one, but clearly it's not having lasted about 7,000 miles and just shy of 18 month.

If your going through them like candy you might want to take a better look at your electrical loop. There could be something that's killing your Regulators/Rectifiers.

I found this video quite helpful

Also ElectroSport seems to make good R/R but their US based. You can still buy them Electrosport Industries Regulator/Rectifier ESR170

And another thing is your R/R obstructed by anything? they tend to get really hot and need air

Also I would check your stator output it might be outputting too much which is making your R/R work a lot and burn out

^^ That. I had two go on GS550's and a GSX750. Your manual should tell you what voltage should be coming out the three wires.

How good is the cooling of the RR on a GS500?

Either your stator is borked or you have a nasty short going on somewhere. Or both.

That's what in there at the moment giving me too many volts. I've sent them an email, I'm hoping they'll check the R/R that's in there and tell me if it's broken or not. Electrics aren't my hot point.

Get a multimeter like this one and you can check anything you want yourself. You can do a 1 minute long diode test on your R/R to tell if it's busted.

Then you could check your stator to see if your getting too much power which could be burning out your R/R's. And you could check for bad ground.

Getting a Multimeter is a best purchase ever Very Happy

I have one but I'm unsure of the symbols and meaning behind the readings. Next weekend I'll see what it churns out following Stinkwheel's guide.

If the R/R is a one piece unit then the output of the rectifier is usually directly linked to the input of the regulator,so an individual test of each diode in a bridge rectifier would be quite difficult, even with a circuit diagram of the internal setup of the R/R.

Discrete components are so much easier to test Wink
