I'm 58 today, my son took me out for a pint tonight and we got talking about being really good at something. Don't get me wrong, I've done a bit of stuff but the question came up - If you could be in the top 10 in Moto GP, Formula 1, Professional Golf (we both play) what would you choose and why?
Years ago I would have chosen Moto GP, I've raced and won a bit, formula 1? I can't drive a car for shit! Golf, I've won one comp in 10 years.
I chose Golf, mainly because it's all down to you at a top 10 level with minimal politics involved.
What would you choose? Other top 10 choices allowed.

I would like to be a psychopath, not in a criminal way as most psychopaths are in the mainstream and do not kill. I would love to have been that self focused that other peoples feelings did not matter but I am not and never will be. As it is I think about the feelings of others and empathise with them this may sound an ideal but it is not. the amount of freely offered pussy I have turned down because i know the husband, the hundreds of hours I have spent getting colleagues out of the crap when I could have let nature take its course and walk into their jobs. The thousands of hours I have spent mentoring children and identifying with their problems. Life would have been far easier as a psycho.

A writer, probably.

I can turn a good narrative in my mind but I get bored of writing it down and, believe me, I've tried.

I want to write as fast as my brain is spewing it out but I can't, which frustrates me, and I just get fed up with the process.

If I could find a writer that I'd trust to get the grammar and spelling correct I'd happily lay back and dictate a novel, rather like the Catherine Cookson character in Little Britain (IIRC).

Not something I give an awful lot of thought too, but there are a couple of things.

A world class mountaineer. Tackling difficult and dangerous routes that no one has done before - still loads left in the Karakorum and China for example. Living a simple life, living for the moment, risking all for such ephemeral moments of achievement in places of wild beauty and paradoxically, of extreme harshness.

I had a dream about this one, and I've never forgotten it, yet it doesn't seem like a very high goal: to be part of a deck crew on an aircraft carrier. Where this comes from I think is to be part of a hard-working, top notch team, gaining a sense of satisfaction from getting everything perfect, and being safe with it, under intense pressure. I touched on it in the RAF, but nothing so intense as I imagine this to be.

Happy birthday OGR, hope you had a good one Thumbs Up

Something I enjoy, if I'm going to be silly-rich anyway.

Most envious of Travis Pastrana that made it his job to do generally fun stuff and get paid for it.

But then also noted that he doesn't do nearly as much fun stuff these days, because he seems to have knackered his body a tad.

Happy birthday OGR.

[ghey]I'd want to be in the Top 10 happiest people[/ghey]

But happiness or wealth etc are not skills, and I think skill is what you meant.

That's a tough one though... I think I'd always want to keep hobbies and work separate.
Don't get me wrong, I want to do what I love and love what I do, but I don't want to do it as a hobby as well as for a living.
(Red Bull Air Race as a hobby whilst flying commercially for a living would be acceptable as they are completely different. That's like being a motorcycle courier and then racing bikes at weekends.)

So would I rather be really very good at something I enjoy as a hobby, or something I could do for a living? I really don't know the answer. If I did something different for a living, where skill was directly proportional to earnings then maybe that.

For example I play golf. I used to be absolutely dreadful, my short game was so horrible I would sometimes be in triple figures on a 9-hole round Embarassed
Now I am merely "bad". That is to say if I play a +30 round on an 18 hole then I have done well. But it doesn't matter to me too much because I play with people who are similarly bad. I want to get better, and I will, but I never played a round I didn't enjoy, even if I got incredibly frustrated at times.
I get enjoyment from just playing, even if I have a bad day, but also from knowing I am better than say 2 years ago.

I think if I could be really good at something... it'd be bike racing, and specifically road racing.

I haven't ever raced on a short circuit track but I could get on a superbike and nail it around most tracks with the confidence that I probably won't kill myself. (Not claiming I'd be quick, but at least I'd probably be alive if I crashed). But if I nailed it round the NW200 or TT or Pikes Peak or any other closed public road race, I would most likely die before I get halfway round the first lap. Probably from getting a corner mixed up or not recognising which corner it was in time and then getting it wrong.

I wouldn't want to be top level for the glory, or the money, lets face it, there are a great many things I could earn a lot more money in if I was able to choose to be top level in any field, but purely for the thrill.

Instead I just have to settle for blatting my bike in the Peak District. Closest I'll come would be if I watched TT: Closer To The Edge on 1080p Bluray with 5.1 surround sound whilst sat on a bike in the middle of my living room whilst leathers and helmet.

I would like to be able to focus on something for longer than 6months, I'd settle for that.

A comedian to make people laugh or an inventor to just design things that help and improve lives. Which is why I always fancied Robotics but never got into it.

by the measure of no feelings, I should be classed as a psychopath, I am the most apathetic person most people will ever meet. When I start a new project, its all that matters, even to the point were I will not eat until the target has been met.

as for me, the top ten least noticed people that have done something amazing and cool, like finding the fundamental calculations that make nuclear fusion an achievable reality in my lifetime, or intergalactic travel that will allow humans to be able to see other planets and star systems in the single lifetime

Very cogent point Thumbs Up

That said, you have to be "full-psycho". "Occasionally self-aware psycho" does things his way, then mopes about it later.

For me, I wish I'd been an athlete. Perhaps gymnastics or something. Loosely teambased, but your success is your own and your body is your pride.

That would have been nice.

Helicopter pilot.
Would have joined air cadets and RAF in order to get appropriate licences.
Then doing scenic flights for a number of years to get my flying hours up
and finally once very experienced become an air sea rescue pilot.

Two choices for me.

Touring car driver - I would've been drivng in the era when fitness wasn't so high up the list of priorities (so I wouldn't spend all my spare time training) I could've been guesting at places like Bathurst (when it was a proper race) maybe the odd bash at Le Mans, and now I'd be approaching my dotage, doing historics at events like Goodwood.

Session drummer, after the style of Clem Cattini - I would've been associated with some of the biggest hits in pop music, but because I'm a bit younger than Clem and the industry treated people a little bit better, I might've earned some serious money and be paying to do some of my first choice.

Being a golfer would be nice. I like to travel and they always go to nice sunny places. They also seem to be the most friendly bunch of people and actually hope their opponents play well but with them playing better. The general lifestyle must be good being a pro golfer, I'm up for that.

I'd also like to be a computer genius, perhaps not too geeky, but to have developed something along the lines of Facebook, You Tube, Twitter, Minecraft etc. Even that kid that sold his news app to Yahoo for £15m, something like that. Apart from knowing nothing about coding I also keep telling myself that I've missed the boat but more things pop up all the time, I just don't have any ideas is the bottom line.

Linked to that, I'd also like a cushy lifestyle being one of these Youtube millionaires. Filming things I'm interested in and putting a video up - how could life get easier than that. The guy that stands on Mulholland filming bikes and the odd car - what a life, Stampy too, lucky lucky bastards. Again, I could do this, but I suck for ideas and can't think of anything unique and unless it would guarantee money, I can't afford to spend the time doing it because of Real Life work.

Failing that I'd like to do anything that pays really well and involves not doing a lot.
