Evening all!

I've decided to experiment with using a raspberry pi as a media centre and could do with a little help.

I have a 2tb drive to store content on, but I'm not sure how best to connect it.

I could presumably plug it straight into the pi, but is there any way my pc could stall access the drive without having to unplug it each time I want to transfer files to it.

Option b would be to connect the drive as nas, but can the pi see nas drives? Also, would I get issues when streaming hd films to it? The pi will have a wired Internet connection.

One last question. What is it best to have the drive formatted to?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hook it to your pc, share it out using NFS.

Eye, but then (presumably) I need to have the pc switched on, and the whole point of trying the pi was so I didn't have to listen to the damn thing all evening!

Well you are going to have to use usb then.

You either have the pc on as a media server that provides the data to the pi, or you use the 2tb usb drive directly with the pi.

To be honest mate, this has been discussed many many times in the geek zone.

Is it a NAS?
Is it a USB drive?
What model R-pi?

Blood... stone....

Which BT Hub?
Does it have a USB port for sharing out drives over the network?

If not then you will need to purchase one, however I have found them to be rather slow for data transfer.

Anything more than overnight backups and you really need something dedicated.

Pick up this for £119
https://www.dabs.com/products/d-link-sharecenter-quattro-4-bay-nas-network-storage-solution-7WRB.html

Pop the 2TB drive out of the case and chuck it in the NAS, or buy a bare 2TB drive.

Might aswell start with something that you can expand.

Speed was my concern. I'll get a dedicated nas.

Cheers Cansa!

Thumbs Up

I have a USB HDD plugged in to my Pi. I transfer files to it using SCP because I don't have masses of data to transfer, and care very little about speed.

Thanks for that Cansa.

1 more question.

Which solution would give me the best performance for the media centre (fastest access, no buffering) for watching hd movies.

Drive connected to Pi via usb, or NAS drive via Ethernet cable?

The limiting factor is both will be going through the USB, eth is just a network to usb adapter built on board.

I prefer the NAS + NFS system as it keeps everything working and lets the pi focus on playing the media.

The idea is to off-load as many processes as possible onto something else.
