Saw this and was thinking this winter could be quite bad.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/nature/520672/Winter-weather-2014-UK-forecast-cold-snow-November

HOWEVER this is the express we are talking about....

'If only Diana were here' they cry

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

I live in London, and I'm no where near important enough to have a private underground parking space and/or personal driver. It's the tube, the motorbike or (I guess) a pushbike.

If there is snow on my street, I take the tube. If not, I take the motorcycle. At about 35 miles round trip, it's a bit long for the pushbike.

The Express has a permanent boner for bad weather and they sell rags by being sensationalist shit-stirrers. I wouldn't worry about it.

After a couple of nobheads nearly wiping me out in the last month, the Mrs is pushing me to buy a cheap car to get to and from work when its wet / icy / end of days. I am pushing back on the idea, but this morning, after slowly going through a 3 foot puddle (slowly), and water penetrating my waterproof overtrousers (bag of shite), kevlar jeans and work jeans, my cold wet testicles desperately want a car.

I dunno. I'd be happy with a pair of trousers that were actually waterproof but didnt cost a fortune to buy. Other than that, I'll be on the bike unless two wheels aren't safe and I need the 4x4 to get in.

When I had only a bike as transport, it got used throughout the winter, except for when there was a high risk of ice/snow conditions. Thankfully, we don't get too much of that here in the south of England, even in the worst winters, or if we do, it doesn't usually last all that long. Then, I just used the bus (last time I had to do this, it wasn't a long trip, and I did sometimes walk - 4 miles each way).

Now I have the luxury of a car, and you're damn right I'll use it through the worst of the winter! Although last year I still kept the bike on the road throughout, and did have a couple of good winter rides on the better days, few though they were.

This year, I have just SORN'd the bike, but that was because of my off and subsequent immobility coinciding with the tax expiring. I am sure that as soon as I have done a few repairs to the bike and am properly back on my feet, I will put it back on the road. I have left the insurance running for this reason.

FCUK that. I've got a CG and I've bought some crash bars for chinese bikes that I'm gonna bodge on and have a blast through the winter. Managed the winter last year without crash bars so I should be reet.

I haven't really stopped driving my car in summer. I still drive to work, take my son to school, do weekly shopping, family trips etc.

The bike on the other hand will go into hibernation. I see no benefit of riding it in cold and icy days. It doesn't make you a better rider no matter how hard to try to convince yourself and everybody else about it Wink

Agreed. If you hit a patch of ice, you're off. Nothing you can do to influence it, no matter how good a rider you are. Or maybe once you can stamp a foot down and keep upright. But if you often ride in icy conditions, how long before you have an encounter in which that doesn't work?

My trip to work now is 3 miles each way. Pointless waking the bike up for that. And I won't be walking or cycling it, cos it's down a winding, unlit country lane with no pavement. Every winter, cyclists get taken out on it.

To me, bikes are now solely about fun and enjoyment. I don't get that from winter riding these days.

I have had the good fortune of having a nice free car land in my lap. I'd be a mug not to take advantage of that!

Its part of why I've kept my lovely little CG, although part of me is tempted to just get a little pitbike and zip straight down the canal to work and back

I don't have a car. I'll get back on four wheels again eventually but for me it's utility. I'd still rather have the bike for the work run because it shaves off 45 minutes of travel each way, that's 90 minutes a day I get back because I don't get stuck in traffic. If it was icy to the point of dangerous I'd get the train but in comparison to a bike it's so expensive and I still have to walk a couple of miles or waste more money on the bus. Bus + train is ÂŁ13 a day (20 weekdays in a month = ÂŁ260) costs more than the finance, petrol, insurance and service per year and obviously with the bike I can go almost anywhere.

Bike is my sole transport so I'll be riding all winter (wife has a car but that's just used for big shopping trips). Bought a crappy v-clic earlier in the year and stuck a big bore kit on it, that'll be my main winter transport with the ZZR only getting fired up for longer journeys.

I'm self employed so don't need to travel to work but I have never put my bike away for winter.

When I was working in a factory most of winter I would use the car because it saved the hassle of getting dressed up but I would still use the bike on my days off. I would even bike it to work on the odd day in winter when I felt like it.

The idea of putting a bike away for winter just seems silly to me.

I'll be putting the bike away in a fortnight for the next three months. Normally I'll ride all through the winter but as I'm in Florida again for the winter and have no bike out there (yet!) I'll be driving the cage again. Bizarrely enough the only time I ever drive a cage now is when I'm in the States. Mr. Green

Its a CG... Why on earth do you need crash bars?
The bike itself is one dinky little crash bar with a petrol tank.

Bloke on my morning's commute today was giving it the beans on a Piaggio MP3 - pissing down, leaves, not a single fuck was given. Tempting.

My commute is 2 miles, not taken the bike in about 3 years, just not worth it with time-wise.

Even if it was 20 I'd still drive from August onwards. That said, I live in Tewkesbury - we don't get much traffic round 'ere Laughing Laughing
