Has anyone experimented with TOR or such like, worth it or not?

If you want

- mail order drugs

- illegal porn

- conspiracy theories

Then it is a treasure trove. Otherwise not much everyday use

I'm more interested in the anonymity of TOR. My wife is quite high up in business and attended a seminar type thing where she was shocked at the amount of personal data various people are harvesting from your browsing. Some of the speakers were apparently almost gloating.
I have always known this happens but not to that extent.

Also if only 20% of the web is accessible for 80% of people by normal browsers, I want access to the other 80% and my own morality will be the censor. Not interested in illegal porn shit, drugs, hiring an assassin etc.

I don't know where all the figures come from about only being able to access 20% of the Internet through a normal browser. It's not like you go on Tor and suddenly see lots more.

Unless you live in an oppressive country where websites are blocked, or as previously mentioned you want to buy drugs or something, there's not much point in it.

It's all overrated imo.

Once you get tor, you have to play with the settings abit to make yourself that little bit more 'anonymoose' there's loads of guides about.

I would guess you're talking well, well under 1%.

What 'personal data' are you worried about people recording?

First off, the majority of 'personal' stuff gets freely given to the likes of facebook.

Various places will keep a track of the sites you visit, so that they can present advertising with products you're more likely to be interested in.

To be properly anonymous using TOR, you need to disable javascript - the 'mercans attacked a load of people who weren't recently.

This combined with many exit nodes being heavily used, meaning browsing is often peppered with captchas to ensure you're not a bot means that it can be a rather unsatisfactory experience.

TOR can be useful if you live in a society which censors websites, such as China the UK - many use it to access torrent sites - for entirely legitimate purposes, I'm sure!

You need to remove "Flash" as well as "Java", both leak data.

Back on topic, "the amount of personal data various people are harvesting from your browsing" that the speakers were gloating about, they made any mention of the involvement of yahoo toolbars et al?
